Duties

Help
  • Provides scientific advice to the agency, trading partners, other agencies, and the industry in one or more of the following agricultural trade areas: pesticides, contaminants, toxicology, plant health and food safety.
  • Performs a variety of complex scientific and professional work requiring expertise in the methods of scientific research and analysis. Develops the deadlines, projects, and workplans for evaluating developments in the assigned field.
  • Contributes to the development of U.S. policies and strategies related to agricultural sanitary and phytosanitary and technical barriers to trade and the integration of scientific contributions, addressing scientific versus policy objectives.
  • Develops responses to other U.S. agencies, as well as non-government stakeholders and related organizations, in the resolution of extensive and highly visible SPS and TBT agricultural trade questions and problems.
  • Represents the agency as a technical expert in the assigned field of scientific study at conferences, meetings, and with international standard setting bodies and other government agencies.
  • Analyzes relevant information from scientific and academic papers and applies information to discuss and improve programmatic study and analyses in support of agricultural trade issues.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

BASIC REQUIREMENT: Degree: Biological Sciences, Agriculture, Natural Resource Management, Chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal government) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:

  • Advanced experience in biology or another related scientific field such as biochemistry, food science, plant science or pathology.
  • Experience in the application of statutes and legislation governing U.S. agricultural trade sufficient to resolve complex problems.
  • Experience with the modification or adaptation of standard scientific analysis processes and procedures when assessing, selecting, and applying remedies suited to the assigned problem or situation.
  • Experience in the application of agricultural regulatory requirements when performing reviews and studies and when providing advisory and/or specialized services to the agency and industry stakeholders.
  • Experience performing scientific research and analysis that requires complex tests and/or procedures using highly specialized scientific methods or techniques; recognizing and identifying unusual and diverse entities, occurrences, or investigative outcomes relevant to the program area.
  • Experience modifying or adapting established scientific protocols and procedures in response to test or study findings.'
