Duties

  • The ideal candidate would have a Ph.D. or M.D. (or M.D., Ph.D.) or equivalent doctoral degree in Biomedical Sciences or related fields. The successful applicant will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Manage resources from CARD for funding start-up costs and on-going program operations, and will be responsible for managing a substantial budget, personnel, and space within the facility, plans, assigns, and reviews the work of subordinates.
  • Provide technical advice and consultation in both formal and informal settings within CARD and the broader scientific community.
  • Develop periodic progress reports and evaluation materials, including the preparation of analyses and evaluation reports from program activities related to strategic scientific priorities.
  • Keep abreast of scientific developments through review of literature and attending professional meetings.
  • Initiate and manage significant research projects within CARD including large collaborative research projects.
  • Involved in project prioritization and in identifying research and development opportunities that fit within the program and mission of CARD.
  • Lead a program devoted to the understanding of scientific problems relevant to neurogenomics and diagnostics.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Biologist, GS-401 position you must meet the following Education Requirements:
A. have completed the requirements for a bachelor's (or graduate) degree in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to this position, from an accredited college or university; OR

B. have a combination of experience and education which includes courses comparable to a major in a biological science, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to this position, AND have appropriate experience or additional education which demonstrates similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the duties of this position.

Additionally, in order to qualify at the GS-15 level, you must:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service performing the following types of tasks: managing a complex program of laboratory research with a substantial budget; overseeing multidisciplinary scientists and staff in Neurogenomics and Diagnostics; lead a program devoted to the understanding of scientific problems relevant to neurogenomics and diagnostics; developing genomic sequencing methods from cells and tissue; analyzing large-scale sequencing data; creating and maintaining a mentoring and development program for trainees and staff; developing periodic progress reports and evaluation materials, including the preparation of analyses and evaluation reports related to strategic scientific priorities.
