Duties

Help
  • Assists in locating field sites using aerial photographs, GPS and topographic maps.
  • Collects a variety of data including forestry, botanical, and geographic measurements according to nationally standardized protocol and field procedures.
  • Obtains data on: tree growth and mortality; forest type, stand size and stand age; anthropogenic treatments and/or natural disturbances; insects and disease; soil attributes; and understory vegetation composition.
  • Assists in protocol interpretation when assessing complex or unusual situations.
  • Uses resources such as botanical keys or plant association guides to identify plants and site conditions encountered.
  • Records all measurements utilizing a portable data recorder; completes accurate and concise plot summaries
  • Independently edits and loads plot data on a regular basis; Actively participates in the safety program, assisting in identifying hazards and mitigating actions.
  • Travels by vehicle, helicopter, stock, small boat, or other means as necessary to access field sites.
  • Assists with preparation for field work including reviewing historical plot data, researching and recording ownership information and contacting landowners and managers.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

GS-06 Level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level. Specialized experience at this level is defined as having at least 3 of the following:

- Collecting forest inventory or forest ecology data in a field based setting
- Interpreting standard procedures, consulting field guides, and ensuring that data is in compliance with established protocol.
- Identifying plants using botanical keys and/or field guides
- Summarizing natural resource data in written reports

TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

Additional information

NOTE: Work Schedule is Permanent, Seasonal, 36 weeks per year for selections made in the following locations: Albuquerque, NM and Richfield, UT. Work Schedule is Permanent, Seasonal, 26 weeks per year for selections made in all other locations advertised. When not working, you will be placed in non-pay/non-duty status.

The work is performed primarily in a field environment including steep slopes, thick brush, and remote locations. Field work often requires moderate to strenuous physical exertion, including walking, bending, and climbing in rugged terrain, under adverse conditions, for long periods of time while carrying moderate loads of 45 pounds or more. On and off trail hiking and navigating are required. Work in the forest environment involves considerable risk of falls due to uneven terrain, risk of insect bites, contact with poisonous plants, etc. Car camping and backpacking will be required. Moderate risks or discomforts such as flying in helicopters, travel by boat or stock animal, and living in a camp in close quarters may be recurring.
