Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factors will be rated not qualified: 1. Have demonstrated skill & ability in the use of mathematics at the high school algebra level to verify volume & height of cement and to calculate other drilling fluids and oil and gas volumes to account for production from Federal and Indian oil and gas leases 2. Must possess (or obtain within 30 days of entrance on duty) and maintain a valid state driver's license while employed in this position. 3. Must be a certified Petroleum Engineering Technician (PET).

For GS-10:
You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: experience pertaining to oil and gas exploration and development activities including drilling and development wells, running surface and production casing, casing cementing operations and well completion; experience with oil and gas exploration and production operations; and oil and/or gas sales methods and equipment; experience with well plugging and abandonment procedures and requirements; or knowledge of the Federal regulations and Onshore Orders that provide the requirements and standards for conducting these operations on Federal land Trust leases.
For GS-11: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-10 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: one year of federal service performing petroleum engineering technician duties that require specialized training and the ability to perform those duties independently as outlined in the vacancy announcement. Completion and certification from BLM's Petroleum Engineering Technician program.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level.
Physical Demands: On-site inspection work requires almost continuous physical activity. Most of the on-site inspection time is spent walking, standing, crouching, and climbing. In climbing up and down ladders and steep stairways, the PET is protected from falls only by firmly grasping on ladder rungs and hand railings. The PET may be required to hike into unusually rugged areas to inspect abandoned sites. PETs are subject to call 24 hours a day and may be required to work long non-stop tours-of-duty, occasionally in excess of thirty (30) hours. Some work is sedentary, although much of the job requires overnight field trips which involve physical activity on irregular terrains and work at physically demanding job sites.
Work Environment: Much of the work is at field locations where it is necessary to wear appropriate safety equipment. The incumbent must walk under and around heavy derrick and hoisting equipment and piping and around other potentially hazardous operating equipment. Work environment involves exposure to extreme weather conditions, hostile flora and fauna, hazardous explosive fumes, poisonous gasses, toxic chemicals, high frequency noises, high-pressure and high temperature equipment, detonating devices, and moving machinery. Work involves climbing up and down ladders and steep stairways. A large part of the time is spent driving to work sites that are located in isolated areas. This work environment requires the use of hard hats, hard-toe boots, safety glasses, ear protection equipment, poisonous gas detection equipment, and cold weather gear and/or a respirator may also be required. The position requires operating a motor vehicle, often in isolated areas, on unimproved roads and in potentially dangerous weather conditions.
