Duties

Help
  • Participate in wildland fire management projects in a variety of roles (prescribed burning, wildfire suppression and fire tower duty) with good communication.
  • Perform forest technician duties designating sale boundaries, selects and marks timber, and performs timber cruising in accordance with product designation and silvicultural prescription.
  • Collect and record accurate data and communicates results supporting forest and fire management.
  • Train newer employees on GPS, GIS and other technology applications to forest and fire management.
  • Train new technicians on safe timber and fire operations.
  • Create and implement plans for daily forest and fire management activities in accordance with leadership direction, standards and best practices.

  • Create and implement plans for daily forest and fire management activities in accordance with leadership direction, standards and best practices.
  • Temporary duty travel of 5% may be required.
  • Pre-employment physical and annual audiograms are required, additional medical evaluations may be required.
  • This position requires incumbent to be available after hours, weekends, or holidays, seasonally, depending on weather conditions, and current or projected workload requirements.
  • Incumbent is subject to recall 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in case of emergency.
  • Incumbent must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.
  • Incumbent is required to wear prescribed protective uniforms and to use protective equipment.
  • This position may require shift work.
  • This position requires a pre-employment drug test.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Experience performing forest management tasks such as; designation of sale boundaries, selecting and marking timber, cruising timber and timber sale implementation in accordance with product designation and silvicultural prescriptions. Experience performing fire management tasks such as; prescribed fire team member, fire tower duty, wildland firefighting and suppression, as well as participate in training for safe fire management. Experience with forest and fire management technology, equipment tools and techniques. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
