Duties

Help
  • Catalogs artifacts, samples and archival materials according to Interior Collection Management System (ICMS) procedures.
  • Sort, identify, catalog, take preventive care measures, package, photo-documentation, storage and retrieval of archaeological collections.
  • Utilizes the Department's Interior Collections Management System (ICMS) to access and catalog the Center's museum collection.
  • Assists in the efforts to eliminate the cataloging backlog.
  • Receives training to perform standard museum collections maintenance activities necessary for artifact preservation.
  • Works as part of a team to ensure adherence to rules and procedures governing security, storage and appropriate use and handling of all items in the collections.
  • Reports object deterioration, damage, movement, and/or theft to Supervisory Museum Curator.
  • Identifies conservation problems and brings them to the curator's attention.
  • Utilizes standard laboratory equipment and chemicals that facilitate analytical and curatorial duties.
  • Prepares finding aids and exhibit text associated with museum collections.
  • Responds to requests for information from the BLM Staff and the Center's visitors (including museum professionals, volunteers, and the general public).

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the GS-5 grade level, you must meet one of the following requirements:
EXPERIENCE: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-4 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Identifying and cataloging North American prehistoric artifacts, using standard museum practices to preserve museum objects; presenting information to visitors; conducting accession and de-accession of museum objects; preparing museum documents; preventing deterioration of museum objects; and packaging and handling museum objects.

EDUCATION:
4 years education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field, such as art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to this position.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
You may meet the qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education (in excess of the first 60 semester/90 quarter hours). Undergraduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position as listed above in the 'EDUCATION' section.The combined total of education and experience must equal 100%.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
