Duties

Help
  • As a Library Technician, you will perform the following duties which is not an all-inclusive list:
  • Performs functions such as: correspondence and contract paperwork preparation, file maintenance, and proper management and use of government purchase card (GPC)
  • Uses computers, word processing, and/or other office automation equipment, not limited to Microsoft office and SharePoint to produce a variety of documents.
  • Creates or maintains spreadsheets or databases relating to Library functions.
  • Responsible for the filing system and maintenance of sufficient records to document library activities.
  • Utilizes the library's on-line acquisitions module and prepares book and/or other library material orders for a variety of vendors.
  • Unpacks materials, reviews packing lists, receiving documents and inspection reports for library materials received against contracts/purchase orders to verify accuracy of stock identification, quantity, costs and other pertinent data.
  • Provides circulation desk assistance to library patrons.
  • Obtains and maintains expendable supplies. Processes orders online for general office supply items using a GPC.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience utilizing Microsoft Office, specifically Microsoft Excel, to prepare correspondence, reports, and spreadsheets and utilizing web-based applications and automated programs such as, Integrated Library System (ILS) to process and/or account for library materials. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Library Science, Information Science, Science of Library Science or Science of Information, etc.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9. Add the two percentages.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-05). Current employees applying under VEOA are subject to time-in-grade restrictions like any other GS employee.
