Duties

Help
  • Hold orientation talks, environmental education programs, and conduct walks using a variety of audio visual and other equipment used in connection with interpretive materials, e.g., projectors, cassettes and video equipment.
  • Greet and inform visitors and answer questions about park facilities and resources.
  • Direct visitors with problems, questions or complaints.
  • Educate visitors regarding rules, regulations and safety concerns to gain compliance.
  • Duties are performed on or off-site at location designated by the project manager, e.g., park amenities, remote locations, schools, etc.
  • Assist in the operation of special events.
  • Perform operations and maintenance activities related to natural resource management/environmental stewardship, e.g., wildlife habitat/food plots, trail and planting bed maintenance, natural resource surveys, etc.
  • Perform operations and maintenance related to recreation management, e.g. beach maintenance, recreation area inspections and correction of noted deficiencies, etc.
  • Perform operations and maintenance related to flood risk management, e.g. obtaining and reporting water level readings and outflows, working on dam slopes, dam tower security checks, etc.
  • Assist with the administration of service contracts for grounds maintenance, trash removal/facility cleanup, park attendants, and vegetative management and law enforcement.
  • Work closely with volunteers regarding all above items.

  • Prescribed uniform must be worn.
  • Work in inclement weather such as heat, cold, rain and/or snow.
  • Occasionally move heavy objects up to 40 pounds without assistance.
  • Perform physical activities which include; prolonged standing, bending, walking through rough and uneven terrain, climbing ladders and avoiding obstructions.
  • Work in and around wooded areas, lakes, and rivers. All safety rules and regulations must be followed during the performance of work.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work as qualifying with specific examples such as park guide or tour leader; law enforcement or investigative work; archeological or historical preservation research work; forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area; or management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with twenty-four semester hours of related course work in natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archaeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, law enforcement/police science, social sciences, museum sciences, business administration, public administration, behavioral sciences, sociology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 120. Add the two percentages.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
