Duties

Help
  • Identifies genes important in biotic and abiotic stress tolerance and other agronomically important traits.
  • Utilizes novel approaches to improve resistance to Fusarium head blight in wheat, oat crown rust, and other yield limiting diseases.
  • Establishes efficient Agrobacterium-based transformation systems in wheat and oat to characterize genes by endogenous gene disruption (gene editing) and cis-genesis.
  • Provides information on agronomic performance of elite hard red spring wheat annually to the wheat breeding community through coordination of the Hard Red Spring Wheat Uniform Regional Performance Nursery and Uniform Regional Scab Nursery (URSN).
  • Collaborates with other ARS, university and private sector scientists to build a multi-disciplinary team necessary for this research.
  • Analyzes, interprets and disseminates the findings in the form of reports, presentations and publications in scientific journals.

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum qualification requirements are found in the OPM Qualification Standards Operating Manual for General Schedule Positions. Qualification requirements must be identified for each grade level advertised.

Basic Requirements


Genetics Series, 0440

Degree: genetics; or one of the basic biological sciences that included at least 9 semester hours in genetics.


Additional Requirements

In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.

GS-12: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree directly related to the duties of the position (i.e., genetics, genomics) OR one-year (52 weeks) of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal Service OR a combination of graduate level education and specialized experience.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled.
The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-12 level are:

Experience developing and executing research on the genetics of agronomic traits in small grain crops; AND

Experience using genome sequence analytical technologies, bioinformatic approaches, transcriptome analytical technologies, and characterization of traits to identify candidate genes; AND

Experience in plant cell tissue culture and evaluation of transgenic plants; AND

Experience publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals research related to genetics.

GS-13: Applicants must have one-year (52 weeks) of specialized experience (defined below) equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal Service. The specialized experience requirements for this position at the GS-13 level are:

Experience planning and conducting independent and collaborative research related to genetics of disease resistance in small grain crops; AND

Experience in techniques to accomplish gene editing and evaluation of genome edits; AND

Experience in identifying specific genes controlling plant traits; AND

Experience publishing as the senior author in peer-reviewed scientific journals research related to genomics of grain crops.


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

This position requires the selectee to undergo a pre-employment check and a full background investigation.
