Duties

Help
  • You will plan, research, and prepare original studies, monographs, briefings, and booklets that furnish detailed historical background and perspective.
  • You will work with the section lead or Branch leadership to determine projects and research topics.
  • You will analyze historical documents.
  • You will investigate and define past events and provide analysis of these events.
  • You will prepare naval history studies.
  • You will confer with the section lead to resolve complicated issues.
  • You will provide updates on progress to the section lead.
  • You will respond to naval history inquiries.
  • You will conduct oral histories, including participating in interviews, preparing interview questions, and processing interviews.
  • You will transcribe historical documents.
  • You will conduct research at various records repositories.
  • You will conduct research and prepare drafts for supervisor's responses to historical inquiries
  • You will establish the relative values and importance of historical facts uncovered as a result of research in order to present an objective and complete picture of the specific subject matter.
  • You will work as part of a larger team collaborating on assignments and integrating different approaches to a project into one consistent and cohesive project.

  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-11) or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing most or all of the following duties: (1) Planning, researching, and preparing original studies, monographs, briefings, and booklets; (2) Defining and explaining complex historical events by analyzing various historical materials and assessing and determining historical probability from various conflicting resources; (3) Investigating and define past events by applying critical judgment in the evaluation of historical sources and the formulating of hypotheses to account for historical relationships and events; (4) Presenting the results of historical research and analysis in a concise, logically-oriented narrative, characterized by clarity, balance, and consistency with the evidence; (5) Exhibiting public and private documents holdings and of the professional literature to satisfactorily advise the general public, on sources of historical information on the Navy; and (6) Providing thoroughly researched and timely professional responses to external and internal historical inquiries.

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:
Applicants must possess:

A. a degree in history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history.

OR

B. a combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
