Duties

Help
  • Summarizes experimental results of completed projects for the first draft of written reports to scientific journals.
  • Undertakes routine care, maintenance, and calibration of moderately complex laboratory instruments, e.g. centrifuges, UV-VIS spectrometer, HPLC instrument, ion-selective meter.
  • Determines the proper experimental approach for experiments related to subject.
  • Analyzes the results according to established principles and procedures.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Basic Requirements
Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

AND

In addition to meeting the basic requirements described above, applicants must also meet additional qualification requirements as stated below.

At the GS-11
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience in planning and conducting experiments to identify and quantify phytonutrients and flavor constituents in food; using analytical chemistry methods such as FT-IR, NMR, GC, GC-MS, HPLC or LC-MS in a laboratory setting, and summarizing scientific data in reports or publications
OR
Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. Related degrees may include: Environmental Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Food Science, Biochemistry, and Analytical Chemistry.
OR
A combination of graduate education and specialized experience.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
