Duties

Help

As the Planner and Estimator (Mechanical), you will:

  • Be responsible for performing planning and estimating tasks by identifying labor, materials, and equipment to accomplish a wide variety of maintenance, repair, alterations, and new construction of mechanical systems and associated equipment
  • Receive a variety of request to work in connection with maintenance, repair, alterations, and new construction of mechanical systems and associated equipment, including steam, water, air, gas, heating and plumbing systems, cranes hoist, boilers, unfired pressure vessels, pumps, valves, piping, controls, and similar facilities
  • Conduct on-site surveys. Based on results, analyze the work to be accomplished based on experience and knowledge of the trade, pertinent specifications, drawings and sketches, in order to determine the feasibility of performing the specific work requested.
  • Prepare detailed job orders in accordance with accepted trade practices and applicable national health and safety codes.
  • Estimate workforce requirements and detailed labor costs by shop, utilizing engineered performance standards (EPS),
  • Determine amount and type of material needed by each shop/work group and estimates overall material costs.

The ideal candidate is someone who has the knowledge and ability to perform a variety of mechanical tasks involving planning and estimating to determine requirements for maintenance projects and the amount and type of work to be performed along with the quantities of material, labor, and equipment needed; preferable within a college or university.

Highly Desirable: 

  • Building Code certification in one or more related disciplines.
  • 30 hour OSHA Certification.
  • Experience maintaining and repairing mechanical systems.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in the field in various buildings and structures, in adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated areas. Work at times is performed out of doors, sometimes during cold and inclement
    weather. Subject to injury from flying debris, dirt, dust, and loose masonry, timber, and other foreign articles. While climbing a ladder, you may be subject to falls.
  • BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION: Successful completion of a pre-employment Background Investigation is required.
  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

Qualifications

Qualifications for the position are based on the training, experience, or other requirements that determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled.

To qualify for the WD-08, you should have the ability to:

  • Investigate, plan and estimate work in writing and to provide sketches, drawings and/or blueprints; read and interpret building plans, blueprints and technical drawings in connection with the maintenance, repair and altercation of mechanical systems including steam, water, air, heating and similar facilities.
