It is one of the three entities affiliated with the Smithsonian Institution and is governed by its own presidentially appointed Board of Trustees. The Center provides a non-partisan policy forum for tackling global issues through independent research and open dialogue that seeks to inform actionable ideas for the policy community and the public at large.

Duties

Help

The successful candidate possesses the capacity to think strategically coupled with the ability to facilitate communication between the Executive Office and both the Wilson Center staff and external audiences on program-related activities or issues. The candidate requires skills in written and oral communication, analysis and interpersonal relations. In addition, in this role the incumbent needs to develop and disseminate information materials to the Center, public and various other pertinent publics including internal or external, foreign or domestic audiences. The incumbent needs to be able to work in a constantly changing environment.

  • Lead creation of/draft speeches, op-eds, employee emails, and other written work for the Executive office, many times dealing with foreign policy matters.
  • Work with program teams and Development office to prepare briefing materials for Executive Office meetings and trips.
  • Set direction and lead the process of sending out a monthly Operations Newsletter.
  • Identify communication needs and be able to develop informational materials that informs appropriate publics of the Center’s policies, programs, services and activities.
  • Manage an international communications strategy, and continuously update a template to be used for staff-wide communications.
  • Conduct a periodic assessment of the efficiencies and deficiencies of the Center’s current international communications processes.
  • Manages communications strategies for specific Center-wide projects.
  • Coordinates with Intranet developers for information, transferring and uploading information onto the Intranet

Qualifications

To minimally qualify for this position, applicants must meet the following:

Specialized Experience: Applicants must have at least one full-time year (12-months) of specialized experience at, or equivalent to, the Grade 6 grade level (relative to federal and market standards) performing the following duties and responsibilities: 

  • Assist in coordinating projects and program initiatives to internal and external stakeholders. 
  • Develop written materials (i.e., speeches, correspondence, reports, and briefing materials).
  • Identify communication needs to develop informational material that informs the public of the Center's policies, programs, etc. 
  • Assist program teams and development to prepare briefing materials for Executive office meetings and trips.

OR

Superior Academic Achievement: You completed all requirements for a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college AND meet one of the requirements for Superior Academic Achievement: (1) class standing(upper third standing in graduating class based on completed courses); or (2) grade-point average (3.0 overall or over the last two years of bachelor's degree -or- 3.5 in my major field or over the last two years in my major); or (3) election to membership in a national scholastic honor society. Honor societies are listed by the Association of College Honor Societies.

Graduate Education: You successfully completed at least one full year (18 semester hours or equivalent) of graduate level education. This education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

OR


Combination of Education and Experience: You have a combination of specialized experience and graduate education described above. This education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. 

A degree in journalism, creative writing, or mass communication with experience writing publications or articles, speech writing and current knowledge in international affairs and U.S. foreign policy are highly desirable.

Note: The “relative market standards” is defined based on the knowledge required to do the work, complexity of the work performed, independence in conducting the work, and regular/recurring contacts.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education
