CG-07:

Under general supervision, the incumbent may have the opportunity to:

  • Research the latest information technologies.
  • Develop skills in analyzing new technology.
  • Research and evaluate PC software and operating systems.
  • Prepare reports using Microsoft (MS) Office.
  • Assist clients in the use of standard MS applications.
  • Troubleshoot hardware and software configuration problems.
  • Provide support to supervisor and staff on projects.
  • Populate and maintain an automated call tracking system with client request data.
  • Participate in the deployment and assist in the management of IT assets and services within the assigned region.

CG-09:

Under general supervision, the incumbent assists or participates in: 

  • Research and analyze the latest information technologies.
  • Research and evaluate PC software and operating systems.
  • Develop and test documented process related to new products or services.
  • Prepare reports using Microsoft (MS) Office.
  • Assist clients in the use of standard MS applications.
  • Troubleshoot minor hardware and software configuration problems; gather, analyze and evaluate basic information for input problem statements and feasibility studies which include analyses of customer requirements. 
  • Populate and maintain an automated call tracking system with client request data. 
  • Participate in the deployment and assist in the management of IT assets and services within the region. 
  • Provide support to supervisor and staff on projects. 
  • Study the business of the division for which assignments are made to acquire an in-depth understanding of its mission and functions.

CG-11:

The incumbent provides day-to-day IT support as a computer specialist. This support can take the form of performing the following duties: 
 

  • Develop information on the client's business operations and assist in the identification and resolution of problems.
  • Assist clients in defining systems and/or business applications requirements.
  • Assist clients in the use of new automated tools which have been directed to them.
  • Participate with the client in applying new IT tools and implementing new automated processes. 
  • Participate in the deployment and assist in the management of IT assets and services within the assigned region.
  • Assume ownership of client requests for help and resolve, optimally, at first contact or,when needed, subsequent contact(s). 
  • Determine when the problem is beyond the incumbent's domain, and assists appropriate personnel for resolution. 
  • Advise clients and management of problem resolution and/or the status of progress toward resolution. 
  • Populate and maintaining an automated call tracking system with client request data. 
  • Monitor the products and processes assigned to ensure they operate efficiently with the FDIC software and hardware environment. 
  • Provide technical advice, information to the client community in the appropriate and effective use of the equipment, software products and processes. 
  • Maintain a working knowledge in the areas of hardware and system software. 
  • Provide technical support to all users of the FDIC voice/video network. 
  • Troubleshoot problems, diagnose systems failures to isolate source of problems in equipment, systems software and applications programs.

After successful completion of the program requirements and based on FDIC’s needs, the selectees may be non-competitively converted to a Term or Permanent position based upon an evaluation of performance, completion of at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program. However, service in the FDIC Pathways Internship Program confers no right to further employment in the competitive or excepted service.

Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sector. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious/spiritual; community; student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. To be eligible for this program, applicants must: (1) be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a degree seeking program at a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis; (2) have an academic major in information technology, computer science, engineering, information systems management, mathematics, statistics, technology management or a related field; (3) have a minimum cumulative (overall) GPA of 2.5 out of 4.0 and (4) be in good academic standing.

Eligible applicants may qualify for grades based on previous education and/or experience to determine the highest grade level for which the individual is qualified. Education and experience requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement.

CG-07: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education; or eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement (SAA) with completion of a bachelor's degree.  If utilizing SAA, you must submit your transcripts or proof of your national honor society membership.

Superior Academic Achievement (SAA):

To qualify for SAA, applicants must have met one of the following:
a. A grade-point average of "B" (a GPA of 2.95 or higher out of a possible 4.0) for all completed undergraduate courses, or those completed in the last two years of undergraduate study.

b. A grade-point average of "B+" (a GPA of 3.45 or higher out of a possible 4.0) for all courses in your major field of study, or those courses in your major completed in the last two years of undergraduate study.

c. Rank in the upper one-third of your class in the college, university or major subdivision.

d. Membership in a national honor society (other than freshman honor societies)recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies.

CG-09:  Completion of 2 academic years of graduate level education, or a master’s degree or equivalent graduate degree.

CG-11:  Completion of all requirements for a PhD or equivalent degree.

Note:  One full academic year of undergraduate; graduate; vocational; trades; technical or high school education is the number of credit hours determined by the college, university or school to represent 1 year of full-time study. The high school curriculum must be approved by a State or local governing body. All education beyond high school must be accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

by Qualifying Experience

CG-07:  1 year of IT related experience equivalent to a CG-05.

Specialized Experience for the CG-07: IT experience utilizing standard personnel computer (PC) software and operating systems, assisting clients with the use of Microsoft applications, and preparing reports using Microsoft Excel.

CG-09:  1 year of IT related experience equivalent to a CG-07.

Specialized Experience for the CG-09: IT experience troubleshooting minor hardware and software problems; participating in deployments of IT equipment; and assisting in the management of IT assets and services.

CG-11:  1 year of IT related experience equivalent to a CG-09.

Specialized Experience for the CG-11: IT experience supporting end user IT hardware and software issues; analyzing and communicating user requirements related to operational or technology changes for all aspects of IT; and implementing IT solutions for customers across a range of technical areas such as operating systems, peripherals, and hardware such as laptops, desktops and printers.

You must have Information Technology (IT) related experience which demonstrates proficiency in each of the following competencies:

2.  Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.

4.  Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

After successful completion of the program requirements and based on FDIC’s needs, the interns may be non-competitively converted to an Information Technology Specialist CG-2210-7, 9, or 11 position in the competitive service.  To be eligible for conversion, interns must meet the performance requirements, completion of at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program, the requirements of the FDIC Pathways Participant Agreement and meet the requirements for the Information Technology Specialist (2210 series) Qualification Standards.  However, service in the FDIC Internship Program confers no right to further employment in the competitive or excepted service.

PLEASE NOTE:  Prior to conversion to an Information Technology Specialist (2210 series), you must either have a degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or a degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks, or have IT-related experience.
