Duties

Help
  • Participates in range capacity studies such as allotment analysis and production utilization. Collects data for five-year range management plans.
  • Makes recommendations and prepares portions of the long-range plans and prepares short-range plans with specific instructions for accomplishing work in the plans. Monitors both the short and long-range plans for compliance.
  • Makes recommendations for amendments or additions necessary to the plan. Answers questions of permittees concerning range management principles and how the plan is developed.
  • Through personal contacts with permittees and Forest users, ensures that the range management plans are implemented on the ground.
  • Takes initial corrective action for trespass violation by notifying the offender and gathering evidence to sustain the charges. Follows up on such action by checking for continued trespass violations.
  • Compiles the complete report on trespass cases for supervisor to make a determination on more severe corrective measures. Serves as a witness in court as necessary.
  • Provides technical direction to crews, which may be under contract or seasonal employees, in various projects for range and wildlife.
  • Observes and notes distribution of wildlife populations and assists in the integration and coordination of wildlife needs in livestock management use and other Forest resources.
  • Plans and sees to the accomplishment of a wide variety of range and wildlife resource related projects such as revegetation, fencing, slash disposal, spring development, range inspections, etc.
  • Conducts field work for proposals, collecting and using KV funding for wildlife habitat improvement work. Supervises wildlife and range seeding on mechanical slash piling areas.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

GS-7: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6); OR one full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is creditable; OR combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

Examples of specialized experience includes: Assisting in range capacity studies such as allotment analysis and production utilization studies; Assisting in planning a wide variety of rangeland management support work such as re-vegetation, fencing, spring developments, cattle guard placement, erosion control, or the treatment of noxious weeds; Planning, directing, and/or performing the implementation of rangeland management projects and program goals and independently applying conventional solutions and practices for a variety of problems.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Additional information

PLEASE NOTE: This vacancy is being used to fill positions for FY2022 Temporary Employment Hiring season. The expected start date for this position will be between April 10, 2022 and June 5, 2022.

This position is temporary, has a Not-to-Exceed date and will be filled for up to 6 months or as a not to exceed (NTE) 1 year, however an extension of the appointment may be possible without further competition. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or lack of funds.
