Duties
As a Librarian (Maps) within the the USGS Library, Science Analytics and Synthesis (SAS), Core Science Systems, some of your specific duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Manage and document workflows and procedures for original and complex copy cataloging of map sheets and series, atlases, and Geographic Information System (GIS) data using cataloging principles and standards as defined in Resource Description and Access (RDA), Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules Ver. 2 (AACR2), Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC) Bibliographic, Holdings, and Authorities formats.
  • Assigns USGS classification call numbers, Library of Congress Subject Headings, Geospatial data, and name authority details to cataloging records.
  • Leads research assistance efforts in response to both USGS and public patrons on accessing and using the USGS map collection.
  • Answering complex multi-faceted inquiries about cartographic resources, geospatial data, and historical collections.
  • Serve as geospatial data expert on library-wide, regional, and Departmental committees related to map content development and access.
  • Leads teams composed of a variety of library staff to conduct special projects that require a strong understanding of library systems technology, databases, software as well as operating policies and procedures.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Librarian, all grade levels. A. Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree;

**OR

B. A total of at least 5 years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services.

Examples of such experience may include maintaining and updating the electronic catalog of library holdings; maintaining an accurate record of the journal holdings; contacting other libraries and arranging interlibrary loan of or copying of material and obtaining reference lists and bibliographies from other's sources; performing literature searches in a computerized database by using knowledge of subject-heading structure and logic of search information; utilizing the computer to access library databases, online journals, online library services, the internet, and electronic mail to identify and obtain information for library users; and conducting research on technical and scientific information.

GS- 09:
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement as described above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include maintaining and updating map format bibliographic records in the integrated library catalog; supporting circulation and interlibrary loan processes; providing reference services using basic searching techniques; and using a general knowledge of cartography, mapping, and Geographic Information System to support collection development and outreach.

GS-11:
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement as described above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-11 level:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include a variety of bibliographic records management, identifying collection enhancements and potential acquisitions; tracking and reporting usage; and using a working knowledge of cartography, mapping, and Geographic Information Systems to support collection development, outreach programming, and reference services.

GS-12:
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement as described above, applicants must meet the following to qualify for the GS-12 level:

One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Examples of such experience may include defining the scope of a map collection, evaluating mapping resources and systems for potential acquisition; original and copy cataloging of cartographic materials, and the development of training and outreach programming for a wide variety of customers.
