Lead Medical Technician assigned to the duty of leading and coordinating up to three or more Medical Technicians. The incumbent will assign responsibilities for customer service and satisfaction associated with collection and receipt of specimens, assurance of integrity of specimens received, preparation and processing of specimens prior to testing, testing requirements and test results, preparing specimens for shipping and dispatch, patient computer data and results distribution.

Phlebotomy Duties and Specimen Collection
Responsible for proper patient identification, proper sample procurement, and proper specimen labeling. Correct identification is critical to patient care. Misidentification could result in various degrees of patient harm, potentially leading to death. Properly identifies all patients with two identifiers to assure the accuracy of the specimen collected and documentation collection appropriately.
Performs phlebotomy procedures following a sequence of complex steps approved for sample collection. Independently responsible for selecting the best venipuncture site, most suitable phlebotomy equipment (needle type and size), most appropriate cleansing agent(s), proper collection vials and assessing the patient's condition before, during and after the procedure.
Attends to the patient while in their care during the phlebotomy procedure. Is attentive to patient needs, actions and complaints. Has knowledge of medical conditions/therapy (e.g. diabetes, anticoagulation, fainting, hematomas) and applies that knowledge while the patient is in their care. Independently determines the need and initiates a STAT Page, Code Blue and/or Code Orange. In the event of a STAT Page or Code Blue, the phlebotomist administers initial intervention until specialized assistance arrives on the scene.
Medical Technician Leader Duties
Distributes and balances the workload among employees in accordance with established work flow or job specialization, assures timely accomplishments of the assigned workload, assures that each employee has enough work to keep them effective.
Keeps in tough with the status and progress of work, and makes day-to-day adjustments in accordance with established priorities, obtaining assistance from the supervisor on any problems that might arise, such as backlogs which cannot be disposed of promptly. Estimates and reports on expected time of completion of work and maintain records of work accomplishments and time expended and prepares production reports as requested. Instructs employees in specific tasks and job techniques and makes available written instructions, reference materials and supplies.
Gives on-the-job training to new employees and nursing in accordance with established procedures and practices. Coordinate competencies for all staff performing phlebotomy to include CBOC staff. Maintains a current knowledge and answers questions of other employees on procedures, policies, directives, etc., and obtains needed information or decisions for supervisors on problems that arise. Compiles reports using Vista, Kiosk and other data sources to check workload, evaluate staff performance and other required needs that may arise from the supervisor.
Maintain Laboratory Records
Maintains and controls laboratory records. Incumbent is responsible for presenting the data to the supervisor in a logical and systemic fashion. As such, the technician is responsible for some data analysis including arithmetic calculations, algebra, graphing of data using interactive computer programs and preliminary statistical evaluations. Develops and maintains detailed records of all experimental or other protocols and results are neatly kept and catalogued in appropriate format. Data are often graphed or displayed in tables to highlight results. Records information pertaining to the storage of specimens or regents and completes appropriate tracking/inventory system information.
Collateral Duties
Collateral Duties may be assigned at 5%. Examples include but are not limited to the following: Quality Assurance, Safety and Point-of-Care testing.
