Duties

Help
  • Mix various types of chemical and compounds which are used in the neutralization of toxic chemicals (liquid and/or vapor).
  • Operate and maintain decontaminating apparatuses.
  • Operate pressure gauges, torque wrenches, and adapters to release and re-apply pressure to containers to perform mechanical and physical tests on equipment to determine functioning and serviceability.
  • Operate a vehicle used for dispersing neutralizing agent for toxic chemicals.
  • Operate electric, gas, and/or diesel powered forklifts with a lifting capacity of up to 15,000 pounds and heights ranging up to 168 inches.
  • Change leaking valves, vents, drums and/or containers.
  • Operate ammunition peculiar equipment (APE) to test and sample various chemical munitions.

Conditions of employment

  • The incumbent of this position must be able to obtain and maintain non-critical sensitive background clearance for the duration of employment.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug testing during employment.
  • The incumbent of this position must be able to obtain and maintain a Class B CDL with HAZMAT endorsement and GVW rating 26,000 lbs, to haul equipment and variety of chemical munitions, within 12 months of entrance into the position.
  • The incumbent of this position must qualify for and remain qualified for the Chemical Personnel Reliability Program to include random urinalysis as specified in AR 50-6 and AR 600-85.
  • This position requires participation in the Chemical Accident/Incident Response and Assistance (CAIRA) situations and serve on teams dedicated to mitigating CAIRA situations.
  • This position requires a pre-employment and annual physical during employment.
  • The incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a minimum of a 15,000 pounds and heights up to 168 inches fork lift license within 6 months of employment.
  • This position may be required to wear personal protective equipment, and may include a positive full faced-piece, self-contained breathing apparatus or positive pressure supplied air respirator.
  • This position requires possession of a valid, State-issued motor vehicle driver's license.
  • This position requires incumbent to attain certification to transport hazardous waste.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Toxic Materials Handler/Explosive Inspector~ without more than normal supervision. The duties include operating material handling equipment and performing all aspects of duties packing a variety of materials, explosives, or hazardous wastes. Performs mechanical and physical tests on ammunition and their components. Knowledge of inspection techniques for munitions. Follow oral and written instructions which demonstrates the knowledge of and the ability to apply safety standards. Ability to operate pressure gauges, torque wrenches, and adapters to release and re-apply pressure to containers to perform mechanical and physical tests on equipment. Knowledge of inspection techniques for chemical munitions being maintained and preserved, modified, demilitarized, or subject to preservation or maintenance for quality standards. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: The inspector performs work on hard surfaces and in areas that require him/her to stand, stoop, bend, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. He/she frequently lifts heavy items weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds) and occasionally lifts items weighing in excess of 18 kilograms (40 pounds). Work requires manual dexterity and mental, visual, and muscular coordination.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed inside and outside. Buildings have cement floors and most are unheated. Occasionally work is dirty, greasy, and noisy. When working with toxic chemical filled munitions, he/she is required to wear protective mask, rubber boots and gloves, rubber apron, and other protective clothing to include Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and fully encapsulated protective clothing with supplied air.

There is a risk of conjunctivitis, pulmonary edema, and blood infection from exposure to toxic agents. Clothing must be removed, decontaminated, and showers taken before eating or going home. Is subject to urinalysis testing for drug and alcohol use. Incumbent must pass physical examination for working with and handling toxic agents and apply Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and first aid including self-injection of antidote to agent to which exposed. Work assignments involve a thorough knowledge of hazardous material handling, and related activities. Incumbent is required to successfully complete a variety of hazardous material classes. There is a possibility of exposure to hazardous chemicals and fumes from spills and/or leaks. Incumbent may be required to wear protective clothing (e.g., rubber boots, coveralls, goggles, aprons, gloves, respiration, SCBA, fully encapsulated protective clothing with supplied air, etc.).

Education
