Duties

Help
  • Review assigned projects to determine ecological impacts and suggest mitigation actions.
  • Provide guidance in the form of scientific or technical reports for the monitoring of natural resources and training land condition.
  • Provide technical expertise and consultation to internal personnel and external stakeholders and agencies on geospatial analysis, ecology data layering and statistical analyses, Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR), and remote sensing.
  • Implement the Forest Management Plan to include the conducting annual reviews and coordination of major revisions, in consultation with regulatory agencies.
  • Execute scientific studies on the effects of military training and other land uses on installation forested ecosystems.
  • Develop new approaches to monitor natural resources by modifying or adapting accepted ecological techniques and procedures.
  • Write contracts for acquisition and services, and act as a contracting officer's representative and quality assurance evaluator.
  • Organize field staff for fire effects monitoring projects and lead field data collection.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent will be required to attain obtain CPR and First Aid certification within 1 year of employment.
  • Incumbent will be required to undergo an initial, and annual physical fitness test which includes an arduous Pack Test (3 miles in 45 minutes with a 45 pound pack).
  • Incumbent may be required to travel 5% to perform duties/attend training.
  • Incumbent will be required to complete the National Wildfire Coordination Group (NWCG) incident management qualification and training as a Fire Effects Monitor (FEMO) within 1-year of employment.
  • Incumbent may be required to serve a two year probationary period.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driving license.
  • Incumbent will be required to wear protective clothing (i.e. hearing protection, eye protection, gloves, etc.) as provided by the employer.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for GS-0401 Series:

Bachelor's Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to the Basic Requirement above, you must also meet the following requirement:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includesconducting ecological impact and restoration studies, developing scientific or technical reports for the monitoring of natural resources and/or land conditions and serving as a technical authority on timber sales, reforestation and fire effects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

OR

Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).

  • The full performance grade of this position is GS-12. After successfully serving 52 weeks at the GS-11 level the incumbent will be non-competitively promoted to GS-12 with concurrence of the supervisor.
