Help

This position functions primarily in the Orthotic-Prosthetic Laboratory Section at the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital. The Orthotist/Prosthetist provides the appropriate orthotic and/or prosthetic devices and treatment. This goal is accomplished through: (1) A comprehensive examination of the patient and assessment of their individual needs and desires. (2) Formulation of a treatment plan. (3) Design, component selection, measurement/casting of the patient, fabrication and fitting of the device to the patient. (4) Proper documentation of the patient record. (5) Continuing care and periodic examination of the patient and the prosthetic device to assess fit, function and changing needs of the patient.

This work requires a specialized knowledge of the medical and psychological problems directly related to the use of orthotic and/or prosthetic devices; and a specialized knowledge and understanding of the fabrication and satisfactory fitting of orthotic and/or prosthetic devices. These criteria are met with the required certification in good standing from the American Board of Certification for Orthotics and Prosthetic (ABCOP) or the Board of Certification for Orthotics and Prosthetics (BOC).

- Review patient's prescription/referral.
- Take a comprehensive patient history.
- Assist in formulating the treatment plan by performing a diagnosis-specific functional clinical examination.
- Consult with other health care professionals and caregivers about patient's condition to assist in formulating a treatment plan.
- Communicate with patient and/or caregiver about the recommended treatment plan.
- Formulate treatment goals and expected prosthetic outcomes to reduce pain/increase comfort, enhance function and independence, provide stability, prevent deformity, address cosmesis and/or promote healing.
- Identify material, design and components to support anticipated outcome.
- Provide gait training /functional-use training.
- Reassess patient knowledge and understanding of goals and objectives to ensure proper use of device relative to modifications.
- Participates in product development research, clinical trials and outcome evaluation studies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: Orthotist/Prosthetists must be proficient in spoken and written English.
  • EDUCATION: Must have a I possess a bachelor's degree or higher in orthotics and prosthetics from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited program. OR, A bachelor's degree or higher in any major along with a post-graduate orthotics or prosthetics certificate from a CAAHEP accredited program. Transcripts Required
GS-11 GRADE REQUIREMENTS:
Must have at least one year of professional experience as an orthotist/prosthetist equivalent to the next lower level GS-9 that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to provide orthotic/prosthetic services in a hospital setting. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1) Ability to attend clinics and participate as a fully participating member of the treatment team with considerable influence in the development of the treatment plan. This includes advanced knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, kinesiology, physics, and etiology of diseases as well as knowledge of psychology and age related competencies.
2) Ability to conduct clinical patient analyses such as gait, range of motion, life style, etc. for patients with a wide range of complex medical conditions which include unusual problems or complications, and to design unique or innovative devices to accommodate those conditions.
3) Ability to recognize physical abnormalities, deviations, and complicating conditions with potentially life threatening implications.

Physical Requirements: Prosthetics Department functions primarily within VA medical facilities; environmental exposures and physical demands vary across the health care systems. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued sitting, with intermittent bending, pulling, and pushing. Movement between work areas within the health care system is expected. Occasional lifting of objects < 20 pounds may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing appropriate to the health care environment. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, and can shift priorities based on patient and department needs.

Working Conditions: The work is performed in an office and lab setting with adequate lighting and other facilities with no unusual health hazards. Material and chemical exposure is of the same level found within O&P labs across the field (resin, solvent, glue, dust, etc). Basic, standard safety equipment provided (safety glasses, dust mask, gloves, etc) are appropriate for the materials used. Due to verbal contact with patients, family and community providers, incumbent is exposed to occasional verbal abuse. The incumbent observes normal safety precautions.
