Other Information:
You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
--Basis of Rating:
Category rating will be used in the ranking and selection process for this position. The quality categories are Best-Qualified, Well-Qualified and Qualified. If you meet the basic qualification and eligibility requirements of this position, you will be contacted via email after the vacancy announcement closes and given 10 calendar days to submit narrative responses that address the knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) required to perform the duties of this position. You will be rated and ranked based on the information you provide in your resume as well as the responses you submit to the required KSAs. Veterans' preference rules for category rating will be applied.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position are as follows:
1. Ability to formulate and conduct original field-based research studies of volcanic, hydrothermal, and/or volcano-tectonic processes using seismologic and infrasonic techniques. Research utilizes modern seismologic and infrasonic methods to process and interpret data collected by real-time monitoring networks and/or portable deployments with specific application to detection of volcanic phenomena (e.g., explosions, surface flows, migrating earthquakes) and to interpreting seismic and infrasonic signals in terms of volcanic and/or tectonic processes in an observatory environment. Research also utilizes constraints from other related fields (e.g., geodesy, geology, geochemistry, imagery) in the analysis and/or interpretation of seismic and infrasonic data. Please include a list of journal publications, as well as descriptions of field-based research studies of volcanic and/or tectonic processes conducted over the last five years in which you have been a project lead or significant collaborator, and explain your role in the work.
2. Knowledge of and expertise in designing, implementing and testing algorithms to automatically detect, identify, and locate seismic and/or infrasonic signals associated with unrest, eruption, and/or surface mass movements (e.g., lahars/debris flows, avalanches, rock falls), including experience in the use of array-based methods and familiarity with the theory of seismic source processes. Include descriptions of specific algorithms you have designed, tested, and/or implemented over the last five years, including a brief description of the software, programming languages, operating systems and/or hardware tools you used in the development of specific algorithms and for visualizing the results. If relevant, describe the implementation of such algorithms into real-time or near real-time operation. Please describe your experience with real-time seismic acquisition systems such as Earthworm, Seiscomp and/or Antelope and how your algorithms interacted with those systems. Also include mention of any publications that resulted from this work. Lastly, include descriptions of how you or your colleagues used results from these analyses to infer volcanic source processes and any resulting hazards.
How You will be Evaluated continued in next section:
How you will be evaluated, continued:
3. Knowledge of designing, installing, troubleshooting and/or improving seismic and/or infrasonic monitoring networks on volcanoes. Please describe your experiences in working with networks of seismic and/or infrasonic instruments, particularly over the last 5 years. Include mention of your role in the work (organizer, field-leader, participant) and the nature of the network (type of instrumentation installed, permanent vs temporary, real-time telemetered vs. recorded on site, goal of the deployment, etc.).
4. Ability to communicate research results and interpretations related to geologic hazards to scientific colleagues, government officials, media and local stakeholders (such as emergency managers). Please list and describe your level of experience in presenting research results and technical materials to technical and non-technical audiences; consider both oral and written forms of communication, including some specific examples of presentations that you think had an impact on your audience. This can include any form of media meant for public consumption (press interactions, blogs, websites, magazine articles, etc).
--NOTE: If it is determined that you have rated yourself higher than is supported in your description of experience and/or education as described in your resume/application, or that your resume or application is incomplete, you may be rated ineligible, not qualified, or your score may be lowered.
