Duties

Help

As a HISTORIAN, GS-0170-11, you will:

  • Administers and manages the command History Office and history program. Serves as a
    member of the commander's special staff and reports directly to the command's director or
    chief of staff.
  • Researches and writes periodic command histories. Sustains a consistent study of all aspects of the inter- and intra- agency relationships involved in preparedness and response
    to domestic emergencies and their influence on policy, planning, programming, research of
    solution development and the impact of such solutions on subsequent responses.
  • Provides historical support of domestic contingency operations. Prepares contingency
    command historical reports that consider operational requirements, interagency
    relationships, alternative courses of action, and the impact of senior leader decisions in
    choosing specific courses of action.
  • Responds to requests for information. Researches and answers specific inquiries for
    historical information for the state, territory, district, or division commander, staff and
    other US military organizations, government agencies, veterans and veteran organizations,
    and the general public.
  • Develops and implements robust historical writing program including background
    papers, information papers, research papers, historical reports, and monographs to
    increase the understanding of the past and aid present and future planning.
  • Creates and maintains historical reference collection. Plans and executes command oral
    history program.

GENERAL EXPERIENCE: N/A

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Must have at least 12 months of experience at the next lower grade level that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Education

All applicants must have completed at least 18 credit hours in history.

3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the following competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics):

  • Professional knowledge of agency history, current operations, and military heraldry
    programs, sufficient to present historical information to professionals and nonprofessionals,
    and professionals from other related disciplines.
  • Professional knowledge of oral history standards, practices, and procedures required to
    enable the institutional program to comply with professional standards in the field, in such
    areas as research, processing, access, and protection.
  • Professional knowledge of, historical methodology sufficient to gather and critically
    evaluate evidence, establish historical facts, determine their relationship as part of a
    complex whole and present the results in a concise, logically-oriented narrative which is
    characterized by clarity, consistency with the evidence, and balance.
  • Professional knowledge of historical research methodology used to assist historian in
    planning and conducting historical studies.
  • Knowledge of archival practices, theory, and techniques sufficient to plan, implement and
    maintain, a command-wide historical document collection program for the organization.
