Duties

Help

The Academy Training Specialist:

  • Performs assignments of average difficulty requiring the application of fundamental principles, concepts, techniques, and guidelines relative to the shipboard training program.
  • Assists with career fairs to include, set-up, contact with employers, liaison with employers, scheduling interview space, and handling display materials.
  • Prepares, compiles, and maintains all records and data covering Midshipmen Internship assignments and grades, Sea Project grades, awards for excellence, and remediation of deficiencies.
  • Maintains and updates database, utilizing a personal computer, from data provided by Academy Training Representatives records documenting Midshipmen sea year assignments. Prepares notification to the U.S. Coast Guard concerning Midshipmen eligibility for license qualifications, graduation, etc.
  • Arranges for and distributes Sea Projects to all Midshipmen; assures sufficient supply of and distributes Sea Year Guide and Instructions to all midshipmen; arranges with all Academy/Personnel involved for the pick-up of Sea Projects from Midshipmen returning from their sea year assignments.
  • Assists Academy Training Representative in the assignment, detachment, and transfer of Midshipmen to a variety of ships and internship assignments.

This position is ideal for a highly motivated professional who has good communications skills in order to deal effectively with all levels of the Academy, Midshipmen, parents, maritime transportation companies, other Federal agencies and the general public.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.

  • PROBATIONARY PERIOD: You must complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).
  • TIME-IN-GRADE: Federal applicants must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade in the competitive or excepted service in the executive branch to satisfy time-in-grade restrictions contained in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F.
  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet either the education or specialized experience requirements.

To qualify for the GS-09 on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-07 it must include:

  • Experience applying rules, regulations, guidelines governing a variety of records.
  • Experience with office administrative and clerical practices and procedures including correspondence, file maintenance, and report preparation.
  • Experience using various office automation applications and systems to prepare a variety of materials and documents in various formats.

To qualify for the GS-09 on Education alone, you must have:

  • 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or have been awarded a master's or equivalent graduate degree.
  • You can also qualify based on a combination of graduate education and experience. This must be fully supported by your resume and transcripts, provided with your application.
