Summary
This position is located in the Archival Affairs Branch, Archival and Curatorial Affairs Division, National Institute for Holocaust Documentation (NIHD), United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM), with a duty station of the David and Fela Shapell Collections, Conservation, and Research Center (Shapell Center), with a duty station in Bowie, MD.
The Cataloger works under the general administrative and professional supervision of the Chief Archivist and the primary purpose of the position is cataloging multiple formats and types of Museum collection materials, such as personal papers and manuscripts, three-dimensional artifacts, and time-based media, including oral histories, historic film footage, and sound recordings. This work includes both enhancing existing catalog records and creating new, original catalog records, in order to make the collections discoverable and accessible to researchers and the general public.
The Cataloger utilizes metadata standards, Library of Congress Subject Authority and Name Authority Headings, and other standard vocabularies and systems as appropriate to the material.
Creates scope and contents notes based on media content (visual and audio interview summaries, donor records, transcripts, and other existing contextual data). Includes information on subject, provenance, legal status, conditions on access, conditions of use, and digitization status. Scans and makes machine searchable finding aids, transcripts, translations, summaries, or other appropriate material, and attaches them to the catalog record.
Works collaboratively to ensure consistency in the display and retrievability of metadata to enhance access and discoverability through various channels.

BASIC REQUIREMENT:
1. Bachelor's degree or higher in archival science or bachelor's degree or higher with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government. OR
2. A combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in 1 above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. NOTE: Professional experience must have been in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values. The following are illustrative of kinds of experience that may be accepted as meeting the professional experience requirements: (1) experience as an archivist in Federal, state, religious institution, business, or other archives, or in manuscript depositories, and (2) experience of an archival nature that involved research in archival science, or in a directly related field such as history, government, economics, political science, international relations, or international law.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
For the GS-09 level applicant must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level that clearly demonstrates knowledge, skills and abilities related to conducting historical and other research in primary and secondary sources and creating scope and contents notes based on media content. OR
Two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field of study. OR
combination of specialized experience and education as described above.
For the GS-11 level applicant must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level that clearly demonstrates knowledge, skills and abilities related to applying appropriate measures to ensure the physical security and safe handling of collection materials and institutional files; Conducts historical and other research in primary and secondary sources and uses the cataloging and collections management systems to enhance existing records. . OR
Three years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent in a related field of study. OR
A combination of specialized experience and education as described above.
