Help

As a Biological Science Laboratory Technician (Animal)within the National Wildlife Health Center, some of your specific duties will include:

- Independently provide technical oversight of work force consisting of animal care technicians and students for a wide variety of captive species of birds, mammals, amphibians/reptiles, and fish, including but not limited to, mice, rats, hamsters, prairie dogs, squirrels, bats, game birds, birds of prey, and passerines. Responsible for establishing work assignments including work schedules. Monitors student contracts to ensure funds are sufficient to support the number of work hours.
- Serve as an integral link between the research and animal care staff by participating in the development and review of animal models, husbandry and research protocols including the design of in vivo animal research studies involving behavioral testing. This includes conducting/coordinating protocol planning meetings with scientific, veterinary and support staff, providing advice on biomedical research equipment and collection of biomedical data. - Manage animal services accounts and assesses and tracks animal room charges. Assist Science Support Branch Chief (supervisor) in setting room rates. Order and maintain inventory of supplies and materials used in the animal isolation facility, including but not limited to feed, bedding, chemicals, and personal protective equipment
.- Prepare and maintain detailed and accurate records and checklists that document husbandry practices, experimental results, disinfection certification, and personnel training procedures, ensuring all are in compliance with rules and regulations set forth in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the Animal Welfare Act, the NWHC Animal Care and Use Committee, as well as all safety and environmental regulations and reporting requirements. Serve as a member of the NWHC Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee charged with reviewing animal protocols and study designs.
- Provide training to students, other animal services technicians, and researchers including but not limited to general husbandry, health observations, animal procedures, record keeping, decontamination procedures, and the use of specialized equipment.
- Develop, assess and improve husbandry practices for research animals, wildlife, or zoo animals
.- Work at Animal Biosafety Level 2 (ABSL2) and Animal Biosafety Level 3 (ABSL3) containment following biosafety rules and regulations set forth by the Federal Select Agent and Toxin Program and the NWHC Institutional Biosafety Committee as well as best practices outlined in the Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL).
Physical Demands: The work involves bending, walking, and moderate amounts of physical exertion. The technician will be required to lift bags, containers, and other supplies/equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. and pushing/pulling wheeled carts/racks/bins weighing up to 150 lbs. Handling animals requires coordination and concentration to avoid injury to the animal and handler. Hand and finger dexterity requiring considerable delicacy and manual technique using small tools is necessary.

Work Environment: The senior technician works indoors in an ABSL3 animal containment facility that requires frequent clothing changes, showering, hand washing, and observation of rigid biological safety practices. Participation in the NWHC Occupational Health program is required, including annual monitoring and immunization. The work environment contains noxious odors and infectious agents capable of producing disease in animals and humans. The senior technician utilizes abrasive and potentially hazardous chemicals for cleaning and disinfecting and is required to use personal protective equipment such as scrubs, safety glasses, coveralls, boots, exam gloves, and respirators. The technician uses equipment that has the potential to cause heat-related injuries (such as an autoclave, cage washer, and incinerator). Work is often done in an isolated area where contact with other employees is limited. The technician works directly with animals and the potential for developing allergies to hair/feathers/dander/bedding is increased.

Qualifications

For GS-09:
Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-9 level:One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-8 level.
Examples of GS-9 level experience could include: 1. Manage detailed and accurate records and checklists that document husbandry practices to comply with regulatory requirements. 2. Worked in an Animal Biosafety Level 2 (ABSL2) or higher-level containment facility for at least 1 year. 3. Manage staff training, schedules and duties of animal husbandry and research staff. 4. Develop budgets, manage accounts and inventories; assess and track charges. 5. Coordinate animal research projects with scientists to ensure protocols effectively align resources, staff and schedules. 6. Develop, assess and improve husbandry practices for research animals, wildlife, or zoo
animals.
**OR applicants may substitute successful completion of 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a master's degree or possession of a master's degree in the biological sciences or other field of study directly related to the work of this position for the required 1 year of specialized experience if it provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work of this position.
**OR applicants may substitute a combination of appropriate specialized experience (as described above) and appropriate graduate level education (as described above) that is beyond the first 1 1/2 years of progressive graduate study to meet the qualification requirements.

Selective Placement Factor - In addition to meeting the basic qualifications described above, you must also meet the following selective placement factor in order to qualify for this position: 1.Are you a Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT), or do you have an American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT), or or do you have a Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG)?

NOTE: Certification proof will be required upon selection.
