Summary

This position is located in the Northern Region, Region 1, Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, Butte Ranger District with a duty station of Butte, MT.

Selectee will be responsible for performing a variety of technical and leadership work in support of the Butte Ranger District trails, recommended wilderness, and recreation programs.

Duties

Help
  • Responsibilities listed at the GS-07 full performance level.
  • Patrols motorized and non-motorized trails and trailheads on narrow trails through difficult terrain to ensure they are used in accordance with forest standards and regulations.
  • Conducts trail reconnaissance to determine routine and major trail maintenance, reconstruction and reroute needs.
  • Provides budgetary input for the district's trail program, making recommendations on budgetary needs and adjusts trail program to stay within available funds.
  • Using a variety of hand and power tools including chain saws, the incumbent works both individually and as the trail crew leader performing trail, and trails program related, maintenance and construction projects.
  • Conducts trail condition surveys and documents trail work needs and trail work performed in the Forest's Trail INFRA database.
  • Manages trail tool cache, including purchasing and maintaining tools and equipment, also fabricates custom trail tools.
  • Coordinates with others to develop a plan to manage and maintain the district's motorized and non-motorized trail system.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

For the GS-6 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level in the Federal service.

Specialized experience is defined as performing at least two of the following duties:

  • Assisted staff in implementing the logistics required for completion of projects, such as trail maintenance and reconstruction projects;
  • Ensured recreation/wilderness areas are operated, used, and maintained in accordance with trail and/or wilderness management plans;
  • Served on a crew responsible for trail maintenance surveys and documented trail work needs in data management systems; and/or
  • Followed trail maintenance schedules for the reconstruction and construction of trails and wilderness/recreation sites.
For the GS-7 level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 grade level in the Federal service.

Specialized experience is defined as performing at least two of the following duties:
  • Conducted trail reconnaissance to determine routine and major trail maintenance, reconstruction, and reroute needs;
  • Participated in the planning of the forest trail program;
  • Led a crew in the development, maintenance, and construction of recreation and trail projects; and/or
  • Provided information on recreation and trail construction projects to volunteer groups and/or the general public.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

Education

There is no substitution of education for specialized experience.

Additional information

This position is physically demanding, requiring the incumbent to routinely lift, push, pull, and carry items weighing 50-100 pounds; and occasionally up to 500 pounds using mechanical leverage tools. The work also requires walking 4-20 miles per day over rough and uneven terrain, and the use of motorcycles and other off-highway vehicles.
