Duties

Help
  • You will serve as a PHYSICAL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN in the RADIOLOGICAL MONITORING DIVISION of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD in Portsmouth, Virginia
  • You will perform a wide variety of radiological control operations.
  • You will serve as a radiological control representative in preparation for ship major repairs and overhaul.
  • You will take charge of initial response to radiation related emergencies and incidents.
  • You will assure adherence to radiological control requirements for various high-skill level trades.
  • You will investigate deficiencies or not fully resolved accidents, determine causes and ways to prevent recurrence.
  • You will serve as a Radioactive Material Escort for transfers of radioactive materials outside of radiologically controlled areas.

  • You will be required to successfully complete the Radiological Control Technician Qualification School and perform periodic requalification examinations.

Qualifications

GS-02: Your resume must demonstrate at least three months of general experience. General experience must demonstrate the ability to perform the work of the position, or familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.

GS-03: Your resume must demonstrate at least six months of general experience. General experience must demonstrate the ability to perform the work of the position, or familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.

GS-04: Your resume must demonstrate at least six months of general experience AND at least six months of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-03 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Providing radiological control services for a variety of operations in industrial environment to prevent radiation exposure and radioactive contamination.
  • Assisting technical personnel with response to radiation related emergencies and potential radiological control casualty situations.
GS-05:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
  • Utilizing practical knowledge of naval vessels nuclear propulsion plants and their support systems to assist in preparation for refueling operations and replacement of fuel cells.
  • Surveilling nuclear propulsion plant work processes to insure proper control of radioactive material.
  • Assisting in determination of the cause of radiological incidents and solving radiological control problems.

Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work in the fields of astronomy, physics, geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, health physics, engineering, electronics, geology, oceanography, and metallurgy.

Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as general or specialized experience when the work was performed in close association with physical scientists or other technical personnel and provided intensive knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, techniques, and precedents.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education

Applicants may substitute the following level of education for the required general and/or specialized experience:

For GS-02: High school graduation or equivalent.

For GS-03: Successful completion of l year of study that included at least 6 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics.

For GS-04: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above for GS-3.

For GS-05: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of physical science, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above for GS-3.

This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, Major Range and Test Facilities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.

The work involves frequent, strenuous activities such as climbing vertical ladders, staging or scaffolding in drydock and vessel areas. Lighter activities such as lifting and carrying items up to 50 pounds; frequent bending, reaching, stooping, crouching, and walking.

Potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present which may include but are not limited to; fumes, dust, noise, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals. May be exposed to adverse weather conditions.

Pay Retention will be extended to eligible Federal Government employees selected for this formal employee development program.

Recruitment incentives may be authorized to eligible new hires.

A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee. A relocation incentive may be authorized.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
