Help

The Division of Examinations conducts the SEC's National Exam Program. The Division's mission is to protect investors, ensure market integrity and support responsible capital formation through risk-focused strategies that: (1) improve compliance; (2) prevent fraud; (3) monitor risk; and (4) inform policy. The results of the Division's examinations are used by the SEC to inform rule-making initiatives, identify and monitor risks, improve industry practices and pursue misconduct.

If selected, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for risk identification, data and analytical projects - both created within the Quantitative Analytics Unit (QAU) and as part of larger Commission-wide work streams with internally created and commercially available products.

As a Quantitative Research Analyst (Financial Engineer), you will:

  • Apply statistics, machine learning and other modern data science methods to further the Division's understanding of data and monitoring for securities laws violations;
  • Research areas such as the analysis of investment returns, risk and derivatives instruments, employing financial theory and applied mathematics, as well as hands-on programming;
  • Support the review of trading for a variety of securities markets covering strategies ranging from discretionary (human-driven) to algorithmic, high-frequency and other model-based quantitative trading;
  • Research and analyze crypto assets and blockchain technologies;
  • Perform text analytics such as topic modeling, entity extraction and sentiment analysis;
  • Work in modern programming languages such as Python, R, C++, C#, q/kdb+ or functional languages and build custom user interfaces (GUIs) for data analytics projects; and
  • Lead or support active examinations of registered entities for which advanced analytic methods are required.

Qualifications

Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sector. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Qualifying education must have been obtained from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

BASIC REQUIREMENT: All applicants must possess the basic requirement below.

  • Degree: Mathematics, statistics, computer science, actuarial science, physics, economics, financial engineering or related technical field. The degree must be in a major field of study (at least at the baccalaureate level) that is appropriate for the position. or
  • Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major field of study as shown in the paragraph above, plus additional education or appropriate experience. Examples of qualifying experience include: applying financial engineering concepts; analyzing financial documents; preparing statistical reports on financial data; developing computer-based programs to statistically analyze data; reviewing and analyzing financial data.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT: In addition to meeting the basic requirement, applicants must also meet the minimum qualification requirement.

SK-14: Applicant must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS/SK-13 level. Specialized experience includes the following:
  1. Applying the theories, principles, and processes of quantitative research; AND
  2. Interpreting financial and securities industry data; AND
  3. Independently developing, maintaining, and/or validating models used for forecasting, valuation, instrument strategy selection, portfolio construction or risk management using modern software languages such as Python, R, C/C++/C#, kdb+/q in UNIX/Shell environments; AND
  4. Independently manipulating large data sets from science, engineering, or finance to develop hands-on programmatic applications of probability and statistics.
