This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Critical Hiring Needs to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

About the Position: This position is with Department of Army, Expeditionary Civilian Workforce. Serve as a Linguist/Interpreter supporting the Task Force Personnel within the Allies Refugee/Allies Welcome sites. Position is temporary Not to Exceed 120 days, may be extended up to 18 months total.

Duties

Help
  • Translates material in Dari and/or Pashtu to and from English, as required.
  • Provide translations and cultural advice to the Commander during meetings and conferences.
  • Maintains continuing coordination with US Forces and Task Force team in support of the Afghan refugee mission.
  • Provides recommendations on a wide variety of guidelines between the Task Force and Afghan refugee populations.

  • This position may require an extended work schedule of 12 hour days, five to seven days a week, and rotating shifts.
  • This position may require the employee to work in austere conditions, outside in inclement weather, and/or in tents.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens

In order to qualify, you must meet the education / experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service which includes experience assisting with interpreting/translating to/from Dari or Pashtu language into the English language and vice versa; assist with translating (written) and interpreting (oral) technical documents and discussions / negotiations from Dari or Pashtu to English and English to Dari or Pashtu.

OR

Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.
