Summary

You will serve as a Senior UUV Software Engineer (GG-12) responsible for software and life cycle maintenance of various Underwater Vehicle (UUV) operational planning software applications and re-host these applications to new computer systems as required.

Duties

Help
  • You will coordinate and liaison with other codes, agencies and the academic community including external and internal supporting groups/units to install software upgrades that support the UUV mission.
  • You will apply principles of software process improvement and adhere to organizational procedures for software development activities.
  • You will exercise a high degree of originality in planning and executing approaches, leading to those solutions by way of a thorough review of existing methods, definition of problem areas and selection and application of appropriate methodology.
  • You will develop and conduct testing of new software developed or delivered and integrated into UUV planning software suite.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS/GG-11) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing duties such as:(1) Using MATLAB, Python, LINUX, PERL, C++ or JAVA computer languages to conduct scientific programming;(2) Conducting scientific programming relating to numerical model development or application or machine learning to transition or maintain software for UUV or other mission planning production;(3) Evaluating information from various computer, computational, or instrument sources involved in a UUV or other operational planning process in order to determine system errors then develop and propose appropriate fixes or mitigations;(4) Using programming or statistical knowledge and experience to aid in the production of operational UUV planning products or other operational products.

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess:

1520 Basic Requirements:

  1. Degree: mathematics; or the equivalent of a major that included at least 24 semester hours in mathematics.

    or

  2. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in mathematics (including at least 24 semester hours in mathematics), as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.


The total course work in either A or B above must have included differential and integral calculus and, in addition, four advanced mathematics courses requiring calculus or equivalent mathematics courses as a prerequisite.

1550 Basic Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.

Series Definition:

This series includes professional positions which primarily involve the application of, or research into, computer science methods and techniques to store, manipulate, transform or present information by means of computer systems. The primary requirements of the work are (a) professional competence in applying the theoretical foundations of computer science, including computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations; (b) specialized knowledge of the design characteristics, limitations, and potential applications of systems having the ability to transform information, and of broad areas of applications of computing which have common structures, processes, and techniques; and (c) knowledge of relevant mathematical and statistical sciences.

Evaluation of Education:
Applicants should have sufficient knowledge to understand the fundamental concepts and techniques of computer science. Courses designed to provide an introduction to computer science techniques and methodologies, to problems of system design, and to other specialized fields are acceptable. Courses or experience in teaching elementary, business, or shop mathematics are not acceptable.
