Duties

Help
  • Participates in cultural resource inventories to identify cultural, historic and/or paleontological resources to provide predictive information to be used in the Bureau's planning system and for clearances of areas designated for development.
  • Prepares description of artifacts found.
  • Prepares documentation such as reports, maps, and photographs pertaining to the inventory.
  • Cultural resource monitoring to appraise current and potential adverse effects upon cultural resources.
  • Responsible for assembling all data in a logical sequence for review and use by professional cultural resources staff.
  • Updates automated databases.
  • Participate in site recordation and complete determinations of eligibility for the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Participate in the management of an archaeology collection, including, but not limited to, updating catalog information, collections research, taking collections photographs, and environmental monitoring.
  • Handles artifacts and associated records in the completion of collections work.

Qualifications

To be eligible, an applicant must:

-Be at least 16 years of age or older for a non-arduous or non-hazardous duty position.
-Be a student who has been accepted for enrollment or is currently enrolled at least half-time in a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) seeking program in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school.
-Possess a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 or higher.

To be creditable, experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (GS-04) of the position to be filled.

Specialized Experience:
To qualify at the GS-5 level you must meet one of the following:
You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-04 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: assisting in gathering cultural site inventory; preparing reports, maps, and photographs for submission to team members; assembling site data in a logical sequence for review; assisting in monitoring cultural resources.
-OR-Education:
Successful completion of a four-year course of study leading to a Bachelor's degree with courses related to archeology.
-OR- Combination of Education and Experience:
You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education. Education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Physical Demands:
Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to efficiently perform the work of the position, and to provide for personal comfort and safety. This can include tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles.

Work Environment:
Purpose of this position is to accomplish duties in support of a cultural resource program. Assignments include those to improve the employee's skill levels. Office work is performed in an adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated area. During fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, and injuries and discomforts from pests and animals. Incumbent will adhere to all safety rules.

Additional information

This position is for students accepted for enrollment or are currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, on a full- or half-time basis (as defined by the academic institution in which the student is enrolled).

This is a career development, excepted service appointment under the BLM Pathways Internship Program that is expected to last more than 1 year. The BLM will require the selected applicant to complete a Participant Agreement in which the selectee must provide an anticipated date for completing all degree program requirements, and show continual progression toward meeting the stated anticipated date.

The agency may noncompetitively convert a Career/Indefinite Intern who is a U. S. citizen to a term or permanent appointment in the competitive service, as long as the Intern meets all agency program requirements and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for the target occupational series at the time of completing all education requirements.

If converted to a permanent or term appointment, the anticipated target position will be an Archeologist with full performance level (FPL) of GS-11; however, the target position and FPL may change based on the need of the organization at that time.

Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.

The official worksite for the selectee is the duty station identified in this vacancy announcement. The selectee will typically report to this duty location on a regular and recurring weekly basis. The selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
