Summary

This position is located in the Pacific Southwest Region on the Stanislaus National Forest at Mi-Wuk Ranger District located in Mi-Wuk Village, CA.

The primary purpose of this position is to perform presale, sale administration and similar duties as part of the timber management organization.

Duties

Help
  • Estimate volume, defect and quality of timber.
  • Conduct timber cruises and surveys within varying stand conditions.
  • Measure defects in timber on the ground using maps and written cruise plans.
  • Lay out timber sale boundaries in accordance with environmental assessments and/or instructions for timber cutting.
  • Perform final inspection of sale area for closure of a timber sale contract.
  • Inspect timber sale operations to verify contract requirements and conditions are consistent with contract provisions.
  • Prepare timber cruises and sample surveys to estimate quality and quantity of timber.
  • Follow direction given by supervisor or other senior personnel to implement efficiently.
  • Provide instruction to cruisers on measuring timber and cruise methods and techniques for appraisals.
  • Inform responsible individual of situations where prescriptions do not fit ground conditions for consistency with prescription.
  • Interpret timber sale contract provisions and Agency procedures, policies, and standards.
  • Explain timber sale contract rules, regulations and contract provisions to prospective purchasers and operators.
  • Summarize cruising and marking data to prepare reports and topographic maps indicating quantity of timber and condition of area.
  • Draft area maps to mark unit boundaries.
  • Use Global Positioning System (GPS) to record boundary locations.
  • Inspect for compliance (with terms) of timber contracts.
  • Prepare written reports of all sale inspections to follow up on deficiencies to comply with contract provisions.
  • Prepare timber sale reports and maps of data for areas cruised.
  • Prepare timber sale maps and tentative logging plans.
  • Prepare logging plans to carry out a harvest operation.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience Requirement:

GS-6 Grade Level: 0ne year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 Level. Examples of specialized experience include: Provided support with tree measurements, map reading and compass use, species identification, defect recognition and determination, quality determination, traversing, use of aerial photos, and use of timber cruising tools and techniques; Interpreted silvicultural prescriptions and timber marking guides to designate harvest timber; Measured amount and quantity of timber in designated timber sale areas; Applied instructions issued in a cruise plan.

GS-7 Grade Level: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level. Examples of specialized experience include: Used computer programs required for data collection, cruise processing, traversing, and GPS. Regularly practiced the fundamentals of timber cruising including: tree measurements, map reading and compass use, species identification, defect recognition and determination, quality determination, traversing, use of aerial photos, and use of timber cruising tools and instruments. Used sampling systems such as 3P, fixed area, point, and sample tree to determine statistically sound cruise samples.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
