Summary

Duties

Help
  • The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity.
  • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Operates sample preparation equipment and analytical instrumentation sufficient to perform sample preparation and analyses by applying established methods and procedures.
  • Logs samples into the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Distributes samples to the appropriate lab section for preparation and testing.
  • Logs chemicals received into the chemical inventory system.
  • Prepares laboratory samples for testing by following sample grinding and homogenization procedures for each type of sample.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment utilized for sample preparation in a proper manner.
  • Assists in the shipment of materials from the laboratory to other locations as necessary.
  • Washes glassware for each analytical section as needed and as directed by supervisor.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

FOR THE GS-04 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-03 grade level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:

  • Reconciles sample information documentation with samples received; reviews for correctness and completeness.
  • Prepares laboratory samples for testing by following sample grinding and homogenization procedures for each type of sample using equipment such as food processors and mills to prepare samples for analyses.
  • Coordinates with analytical staff to prepare samples for testing in the most efficient manner possible by prioritizing work according to sample priority and analytical staff work schedules.
  • Operates such equipment as food processors and mills to prepare samples for analyses.
OR

Successful completion of 2 years of study above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.

FOR THE GS-05 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-04 grade level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
  • Reconciles sample information documentation with samples received; reviews for correctness and completeness.
  • Prepares laboratory samples for testing by following sample grinding and homogenization procedures for each type of sample using equipment such as food processors and mills to prepare samples for analyses.
  • Coordinates with analytical staff to prepare samples for testing in the most efficient manner possible by prioritizing work according to sample priority and analytical staff work schedules.
  • Performs basic standardization checks; makes simple operational adjustments to instruments.
  • Maintains detailed laboratory records and process analytical laboratory data and results.
OR

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree (a) with major study in an appropriate field of physical science, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as physical science, engineering, or any branch of mathematics, except financial and commercial mathematics.

Equivalent combinations of education and experience are qualifying for this grade level.

NOTE: Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work in the fields of astronomy, physics, geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, health physics, engineering, electronics, geology, oceanography, and metallurgy. Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as general or specialized experience when the work was performed in close association with physical scientists or other technical personnel and provided intensive knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, techniques, and precedents.

COMBINATION OF EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE AT THE GS-04/05 GRADE LEVEL: Applicants may have combinations of successfully completed education and specialized experience to meet total qualification requirements. The total percentages must equal at least 100 percent to qualify for that grade level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.   • Locality pay will vary based upon the selectee's duty location. A final salary determination will be made upon selection.
