Summary

This position is located in the Department of Marine Engineering , Office of the Academic Dean and Provost, United States Merchant Marine Academy, Maritime Administration (MARAD).

This position is established to provide instruction to Midshipmen in the Engineering Laboratories and the fabrication , installation, and maintenance of instructional equipment in the various Engineering Laboratories used for the Engineering Education Program.

Duties

Help

The Engineering Technician (Mechanical):

  • Instructs Midshipmen in various Marine Engineering Laboratories.
  • Is responsible for the implementation of proper operation and safety procedures in the laboratories.
  • Has knowledge of welding technology and welding instruction, welding methods in a classroom/laboratory environment.
  • Is responsible for independent instruction and student evaluation for laboratory courses in the engineering laboratories.
  • Provides support in various Engineering Laboratory courses led by faculty.  

This position is ideal for a highly motivated, experienced professional mechanical technician who has experience providing instruction and maintaining equipment in an academic laboratory environment. The candidate will have experience in welding and machine shop operations, and have experience operating, installing and repairing complex instructional equipment. The candidate will have experience in various marine engineering environments, including diesel, steam, refrigeration, and others.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.
  • PROBATIONARY PERIOD: You must complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).
  • TIME-IN-GRADE: Federal applicants must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade in the competitive or excepted service in the executive branch to satisfy time-in-grade restrictions contained in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F.
  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet either the education or specialized experience requirements.

To qualify for the GS-11 on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-10 it must include:

  • Experience welding in a laboratory environment or equivalent.
  • Experience in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of marine mechanical equipment such as pumps, valves, turbines, diesel engines, heat exchangers, control systems.
  • Experience in a machine shop environment including familiarity with operating lathes, vertical milling machines, grinders, drill presses.

You cannot substitute education at the GS -11 level, you must have experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  • Program Management: Responsible for the implementation of proper operation and safety procedures in the laboratories.
  • Technical Knowledge: Knowledge of welding technology and instructing welding instruction methods in a classroom/laboratory environment.
  • Technical Program: Responsible for independent instruction and student evaluation for laboratory courses in the engineering laboratories.
  • Communication: Supervision of work performed by others, including outside contractors.
