Duties

Help
  • Ensure collections from public lands, and the associated records, are deposited in repositories that meet federal curatorial facility standards.
  • Design and implement resource inventory strategies and sampling designs to obtain required data on heritage resources within a given project area.
  • Conduct inventories to locate heritage resources and determine impacts due to developmental activities in accordance with applicable federal laws, regulations and policies.
  • Recommend and/or determine eligibility of heritage resources for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places and provides recommendations for reducing or eliminating adverse project impacts.
  • Conduct outreach and educational activities about heritage resources and values at schools, in the field, or at other community venues.
  • Ensure that inventory and site data are entered, managed, and utilized in various geospatial databases.
  • Ensure that reports and data meet the format specifications mandated by BLM policy and that the heritage resources data inthe system is updated and accurate.
  • Prepare and describe heritage program projects as part of the Planning Target Allocation (PTA), Annual Work Plan (AWP), Mid-Year Review (MYR), and End of Year (EOY) processes.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: Degree that included 3 semester hours each in the following course areas: History of Archeology/archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa/Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development/Theory and methods of archeology, (Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques)/Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work. AND, 6 semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying; AND, Archeological field school. -OR-

Possess a combination of College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education. -OR-

Have four (4) years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.

For the GS-9 grade level: You must possess at least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-7 level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience includes assisting in surveying, compiling an accurate interpretation of archeological and historical data of a specific geographical area and making professional recommendations for archeological and historical resources that may be affected by land surface disturbing activities. -OR-

Education: Have at least 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree. -OR-

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

For the GS-11 grade level: You must possess at least one year of experience (equivalent to at least the GS-9 level or pay band in the Federal service) that includes performing the following types of duties: Planning and carrying out archaeological research projects which center on a major historical theme and time period. Examples: Author or review cultural resource sections of resource management plans; develop mitigation strategies to resolve adverse effects to historic properties; supervise activities to protect and improve the conditions of cultural resources. -OR-

Education: Have 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree. -OR-

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. If you are a current Federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must have completed a minimum of 52 weeks at the next lower grade level.

Physical Demands: Field work routinely requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing or walking over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces or mountainous terrain; recurring bending, crouching, stooping or reaching; using hand tools such as shovels, trowels, or screening devices; and lifting of moderately heavy items such as equipment and samples.

Work Environment: The work regularly involves moderate risks or discomforts which may require special safety precautions, e.g., adverse weather conditions, hazardous driving conditions, irritating or occasionally hazardous chemicals; hostile wildlife; and travel in off-road vehicles. Incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or by the designated Safety Officer.

Education
