Summary

The Biospheric Science Branch at NASA Ames Research Center is currently seeking a Supervisory Physical Scientist. This position will serve as Branch Chief who will lead operations and provide technical and programmatic leadership of research portfolios in their respective scientific discipline. The branch oversees research portfolios that include technology development and measurement and analysis projects.

  • ** This vacancy has been amended to extend the closing date from 09/20/2021 to 09/27/2021.**
  • The Biospheric Science Branch Chief directs research in terrestrial and coastal-ocean ecosystem science in addition to leading-edge applied science initiatives in water, agriculture, forest fires, and capacity building.
  • Supervises personnel, coordinates with Earth Science Division management to forecast and plan branch priorities and evaluates and facilitates research activities.
  • Develops a strategic vision to guide the branch which is consistent with Agency strategic objectives.
  • Leads collaboration with NASA centers, government agencies, private industry, academia and international organizations in research and analysis, proposal development, instrument development, mission development, etc. for the branch.
  • Designs, implements, and reports on Earth science studies through the analysis and interpretation of data obtained from instruments from space complemented by airborne, ground-based, and laboratory measurements.
  • Manages resources, conducts technical reviews, performs programmatic (cost, schedule, technical, risks) analyses.
  • Develops major briefings and program reviews for top center management, headquarters, stakeholders, and review groups regarding program plans, status, procurement, resources, and technical issues.

Qualifications

In addition to the basic education requirement (shown below), you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for GS-15, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 level including leading an Earth science research group or project; resource planning, proposals, and managing risk factors related to science programs and projects; using remote sensing technologies and techniques needed for analysis of Earth science data and applications of Earth science research.

Education

You must have successfully completed a bachelor's or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) physical science, mathematics, life science, computer science, or other field of physical science.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
