This is an internship for students who have recently been accepted for enrollment in or who are currently enrolled at least half-time in a certificate or degree seeking program in an accredited college or university, graduate, or professional school. Half-time is typically 6 semester hours for undergraduates, and 3 semester hours for Masters and above (but may be determined by the school).

The individual selected for this position will:

  • Under the general supervision of a higher grade social science analyst or statistician performs a variety of assignments and projects designed to train the incumbent in sociological, sociolinguistic, political science, or combination of other social science research work, including reports of recommendations and conclusions, as well as to provide incumbent with an understanding and experience in the practical application of statistical theories and principles.
  • Carries on research into the design of mail questionnaires and enumeration schedules for the purpose of effecting economies in cost and increasing the reliability of surveys, particularly research.
  • Assists in performing research into the technical problems encountered in previous surveys for the purpose of effecting improvement in instructions to field and departmental personnel and methods of processing. With a knowledge of program plans prepares specifications for collecting, processing, and compiling current survey data.
  • Reviews editing and coding problems encountered by processing clerks and recommends solutions.
  • Assists higher grade professional employees in the development of schedule worksheets, statistical tables, charts, graphs, and the like. Prepares in rough, analytical and interpretative texts, subject to review by higher grade professional personnel, data collected and compiled under the technical direction of the division.
  • Conducts research on special problems involved in the collection, processing, and analysis of public employment and government finances, including the testing of the accuracy of estimating procedures, and improvement of coverage of specific levels or types of government to increase the accuracy of estimated figures, research pertaining to the organization of the government units, purposes, and sources of revenue, and other research to aid in the classification, analysis, and collection of data.
  • Additional duties may include: Translation review, recruiting respondents, shadow senior researchers on expert reviews, cognitive and usability testing of English and non-English speakers, literature reviews, and other research support.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

This position will be filled under the Pathways Internship Program. This Program allows students to gain paid work experience while pursuing a degree, diploma or certificate at a qualifying institution. Under the Pathways Program, students who successfully complete all work, study, qualifications, and other eligibility requirements may be offered a permanent position work our agency upon graduation or completion of a qualifying certificate.

This position is in the excepted service.

This is a non-bargaining unit position.

This position may be eligible for telework; additional criteria will be required (e.g., supervisory approval).

Qualifications

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

You must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited technical or vocational school, two-year or four-year college or university, graduate or professional school (go to www.ope.ed.gov/accreditation/ to verify accreditation status). Individuals who are enrolled must be taking at least a half-time academic, vocational, or technical course load leading to a degree, diploma, or certificate. You must provide evidence of your current (spring semester or equivalent) enrollment, either on your transcript or by uploading a separate class schedule. If you are completing your current program this semester you must provide a letter of acceptance or proof of enrollment into another qualifying program to be rated eligible.

Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS

Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

MINIMUM GRADE LEVEL REQUIREMENTS:

GS-07: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

EDUCATION: Successfully completed one full academic year of graduate level education, at least 18 credits (27 quarter hours), or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree. S.A.A. is based on

(1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership

  1. Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
  2. Grade-point average (G.P.A.)-- Applicants must have a grade-point average of:
    • 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or
    • 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.
  3. Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society.

  • Practical knowledge of social science research methods sufficient to perform studies, prepare research proposals and analytic reports, and review statistical output.
