Duties may consist of, but are not limited to:
  • Responsible for maintenance and repair of all gas and electric driven vehicles, such as scooters, tractors, forklifts, weed-eaters, blowers, and lawnmowers at this facility;
  • Responsible for the welding of all materials as required to accomplish assigned tasks, such as stainless steel, aluminum and mild steel; and
  • Able to use cutting torches and grinders to prepare materials for welding;
  • Able to read and interpret blueprints and schematics in the performance of required duties; and
  • Will be required to design and fabricate items needed for the maintenance and operation of the facility that cannot be purchased elsewhere;
  • Inspects, makes adjustments and repairs various types of building service equipment and systems such as conveyors, lifts, compactors, incinerators, pumps, air compressors, electric motors and hydraulics;
  • Maintains appropriate level of computer literacy to use the station's engineering software package;
  • May be required to assist in grounds maintenance, mowing and weed-eating on occasion;
  • Receives general supervision and assignments from the Fleet / Grounds Supervisor as to work schedules, operating policies and procedures.

Work Schedule: Full Time, 7:00AM-3:30PM to include weekend and/or holiday work as needed

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements:

  • Equipment Assembly installation and repair
  • Technical Practices
  • Use of Measuring Instruments
  • Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc.
  • Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment
  • Knowledge of Materials
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The incumbent will often be required to make repairs that will require great physical efforts to lift, pull, push, and carry objects of varying weights, sizes and shapes. He will be required to climb, crawl, bend and may be subjected to standing, crouching and stooping for extended period of time. The incumbent will work inside and out doors in conditions that will often be dirty, dusty and greasy, will be required to work in areas with poor lighting and ventilation, will often be exposed to very hot and cold temperatures, and will experience soiling of clothing and skin surfaces. The incumbent will work in areas where unpleasant fumes and odors are present; will be exposed to hazardous materials, chemicals and infectious diseases; and will be required to use all personal protective equipment available to him. The incumbent must follow all policies and procedures dealing with confined spaces, hazardous materials and infection control.
