The position works on a rotating eight-hour shift, operating 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, in Desert Radio Airspace Information Center, integrating nonparticipating live fire activities, airborne and close air support operations.
Provide procedural air route control for simultaneous, parallel and intersecting arrivals and departures of both fixed and rotary wing aircraft, fighter aircraft (jets) plus preventive control for varying drop zones and flight landing
Control the arriving and departing aircraft operating under Visual Flight Rules (VFR), as well as aircraft operating under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR), by means of radar and two way radio communications.
Control aircraft operating within approximately 1,200 square miles of airspace from the surface to unlimited, through radar/radio contact and coordination with tactical Air Traffic Controllers who set up tactical towers for training during rotations.
Determine and initiate actions necessary so that aircraft will enter civil airways at the time, position, and altitude assigned by Federal Aviation Administration Approach Control.
Serve in the Flight Data Position coordinating with adjacent facilities for the expeditious flow of air traffic in and through the restricted area; assigning transponder codes and recording pertinent data in determining clearances.
Assist pilots with planning flights and filing flight plans by posting update notices, processing data on safe airfield operation, air traffic movement and disseminating flight planning materials.
Provide briefings on aeronautical rules and regulations, airway routes, clearance requirements, air traffic procedures, weather, and navigational aids.
Maintain and update standard operating procedures, crash alarm checklists, operating logs, training materials and any documents concerning local flying areas.
Act as Shift Leader (SL) or Controller in Charge (CIC) on a rotating basis directing the work of employees on an assigned shift to ensure that operations are conducted in a safe and efficient manner.
Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

Must be able to maintain personal physical fitness in accordance with AR 40-501. A
Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
This position is subject to periodic and random urinalysis drug testing.
To occupy this position, at the time of appointment you must possess and maintain a valid Federal Aviation Administration Air Traffic Control Specialist OR a Control Tower Operator's Certificate issued by an agency of the Federal government.
This position will support the Facility Training Program and be involved with one-on-one, on-the-job-training.
Temporary Duty Travel is required up to 10% of the time for the purpose of receiving/providing training instructions and/or other mission essential purposes and travel via military and/or civilian air/ground transportation.
During emergency situations the work may become extremely stressful. You must maintain necessary alertness, self-control, and emotional stability and be able to make rapid decisions and use precise judgment under emergency conditions.
This position is subject to shift work. Shifts are: Days: 0700 to 1500 (7 a.m. to 3 p.m.); Swing: 1500 to 2300 (3 p.m. to 11 p.m.); Mids: 2300 to 0700 (11 p.m. to 7 a.m.) These shifts may rotate and may be changed annually.
As required by staffing, workload, and mission requirements, you may be required to work during other than normal duty hours which may include working nights, weekends, and holidays.
This position has been designated as an Inclement Weather position.
