Duties

Help
  • Assists in operations, repairs, maintenance and monitoring, according to prescribed methods, the operation and maintenance of two major wastewater treatment plants with a total capacity of 500,000 gallons per day and a water treatment plant.
  • Repairs and maintains various laboratory equipment.
  • Performs minor repairs and maintenance such as replacing gaskets, bearings, piping, pump motors, and replacing packing.
  • Performs repairs such as rebuilding and repacking pumps and valves or replacing bearings and shafts in pumps.
  • Overhauls and replaces all other equipment used in the system.
  • The operator has the responsibility to decide whether to shut down a wastewater treatment plant and determine if the equipment still in operation can handle the load or to bypass the trouble until corrective action has been completed.
  • Routinely inspects remote lift stations, backup generators and overflow storage lagoon.
  • Monitors operating conditions of equipment, meters, and gauges for proper operation.
  • Collects and tests water and sewage samples, such as residual chlorine and settleable solids.
  • Gathers and documents test results report that will be reported to regulatory agencies.
  • Treats the incoming raw water and performs basic microbiological tests such as inoculation and incubation of outgoing water samples to verify the elimination of the treated microorganisms.
  • Water treatment plant tasks involve taking a daily test for pH, chlorine, residuals, adjust chemical feeding machines, and inspect deep well pumps and lines.
  • Ensures familiarity with Federal, State and Agency regulations and policies governing operation of a wastewater treatment plant.
  • Operates settling tanks, filter beds, surge pumps, hydrochlorinators, phosphate feeders, soda ash and dry lime feeders, lime solution tanks, and similar types of equipment.
  • Observes motors for proper operation, vibration, or overheating; reports all defects to supervisor.
  • Based on further treatment slows down or speeds up wastewater and sludge pumping, rechlorine or other chemicals to obtain proper bacteriological conditions

  • This is an essential/emergency position; incumbent is required to report for duty during emergencies, critical periods, or during times when the Government is closed due to inclement weather or budget cut-off.
  • Ability to obtain a Maryland Class 3 Water Operator license.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for this position you must meet the following by the closing date of the vacancy announcement:

While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. The responses to the questionnaire and your resume should be in significant detail to provide the person rating your application with a good understanding of your ability to do the job, technical knowledge, work, and training experience, etc. (For example You must have the ability to perform the duties of a, Wastewater Treatment Plant Operatorwithout more than normal supervision (Screen Out)). Applicants who do not meet the SCREEN OUT ELEMENT will not be given further consideration.

Physical Effort:
The incumbent does considerable walking, standing on concrete floors, and climbing stairways and ladders. Light to moderate physical effort is necessary to turn valves and controls. Is responsible to frequently lift and carry items weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds) unassisted and occasionally lift and carry heavier items with assistance of other workers or with lifting devices. May be required to walk long distances in inclement weather to check for leaks and stoppages of sewer system.

Working Conditions:
Incumbent usually works indoors and occasionally works outside for short periods where he/she is subject to prevailing weather conditions. Incumbent is exposed to constant noise, rotating machinery, dirt, grease, chemicals, oil, and fumes in the work area. Incumbent is subject to cuts and abrasions from the use of tools and equipment and burns from chemicals. In addition, incumbent work on catwalks and ladders. Operators at this level follow prescribed safety practices and use safety equipment such as face shields, gloves, hard-toe shoes, respirators, and protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear and may be worn or used for long periods.
Plant requires coverage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This coverage is provided by a small team (three or less) daily on rotating shifts. During 2nd and 3rd shift and weekend coverage the incumbent will be solely responsible for the oversight and operation of the water and wastewater plants.
