Summary

This position is located with the Communications Staff in the Office of the Director at the Headquarters location in Kansas City, MO of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA).

In this position, you will be responsible for serving as an NIFA expert in written communications and providing writing, editing, and rewriting of a broad scope of communication materials related to the research, education, and extension activities of NIFA.

Duties

  • Prepares materials for dissemination on NIFA?s Web site including creating, verifying, and correcting Web files in HTML, PDF, spreadsheets and other formats.
  • Writing or overseeing the writing of descriptive copy to be included in magazines, news releases, NIFA?s web site, or similar outlets to increase awareness of specific information.
  • Develops and updates NIFA intranet, SharePoint sites, and other web-based communications tools and materials for the benefit of NIFA employees.
  • Prepares employee newsletters, videos, and other digital and print communication products such as podcasts, blogs, brochures, and digital displays for internal use.
  • Ensures clarity of presentation after carefully examining alternative methods of communicating NIFA positions to employees and stakeholders as they may relate to controversy.
  • Developing public affairs campaigns that convey information to target audiences interested in or affected by NIFA programs.
  • Where appropriate, suggests and produces materials to be designed specifically as Web publications (versus printed publications that are simply placed on the Web site as a PDF).
  • Works closely with the senior Public Affairs Specialists to ensure the final products meet with the consistency of format and presentation and if required, approvals for release have been obtained.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-13 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-12 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience focusing on conveying agriculture-related news and information or land-grant university communications to the public; developing written products that explain policies, programs, or agriculture research findings to a diverse audience; reviewing text for clarity, accuracy, appropriateness, formatting, and publishing suitability; and creating multi-platform communication materials, such as presentations for internal and external distribution and articles for news media, web news delivery, scripts for podcasts and videos, and reports.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
