Summary

The Laundry Worker works in the Laundry and Dry Cleaning Section of the Environmental Management Service at the Lyons VAMC. Incumbent receives intensive on-the-job training for a variety of tasks and may work any of the approved shifts and/or work areas. Duties may include working on both the soiled linen side as well as the clean or finish side of the laundry area.

Duties

Help

  • Classifies and sorts the soiled linen into proper washing classifications as follows: White work, light, medium or Heavy soiled; colored work; extremely dirty and greasy work; wool work.
  • Gathers small pieces, pillows, mops, and other articles of soiled linen. Incumbent marks and sorts into proper classification all medical center uniforms and uniforms received from Outpatient Clinic.
  • Prepares all lot work for the washing unit of the laundry; shakes, feeds and folds flatwork; folds, stacks and counts all rough-dry item.
  • Processes, assembles and packages surgical sets of linens.
  • Responsible for using a viewing cabinet, and inspecting flat and round dry surgical linen for holes, tears and stains.
  • Surgical packs must be complete with quality linen items in the proper quantity.
  • Maintains record of production for work processed in assigned areas. Incumbent operates power marking machines, one 8 inch roll ironer, and one high-speed 8 roller ironer equipped with spreader, feedmaster, folder and cross folder.
  • Uses laundry baskets and linen carts when handling or stacking linen.
  • Takes necessary precautions to avoid exposure to communicable diseases and injuries; must test safety devices daily.
  • Reports any unsafe conditions that exist so they can be corrected.
  • Required to walk, stand, stretch, and bend with constant movement of arms and hands.
  • Light to medium lifting is required when pushing baskets or lifting linen.
  • Works indoors and incumbent is subject to extreme heat temperatures and hazardous work on high powered moving machines.
  • Dons cap, gloves, mask and gown while performing duties in contaminated area.
  • Exposure to noxious odors.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent must be in good physical condition as the job requires continuous body and arm movement, walking, standing, twisting, bending and pushing. Incumbent must be able to lift up to 50 pounds, work from a ladder, and push loaded carts through hallways and on/off elevators. He/she must be able to visually inspect linens and be able to hear bells and alarms on equipment.

Worked is performed under favorable lighting, various temperatures including extreme heat and cold. On occasion, the incumbent may be exposed to strong cleaning solutions. He/she is exposed to dirt and disagreeable odors, minor injuries, noise from working with power equipment, contagions and possible infection. There is a chance of minor cuts, bruises and chapped hands.
