The IRS Internship Program offers IRS employees who are current students with an opportunity to work and explore new careers. You must meet the definition of a student during the duration of your internship as follows:

An individual accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a qualifying degree or certificate from one of the following:
  • High school; OR
  • College/university; OR
  • Professional, technical, vocational, or trade school; OR
  • Advanced degree program; OR
  • Certificate in a qualifying and accredited educational institution, on a full or half-time basis (as defined by the institution in which the student is enrolled), including awardees of the Harry S. Truman Foundation Scholarship Program under Public Law 93-842.
Students need not be in actual physical attendance, so long as all other requirements are being met. An individual who needs to complete less than the equivalent of a half-time an academic/vocational or technical course load immediately prior to graduating is still considered a student for purposes of this program.

Every academic term (e.g., semester, quarter, etc), you must maintain good academic standing with an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester credit hours, 45 quarter credit hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university.

The following are the duties of this position at the full working level. You will have the opportunity to learn to perform these duties and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
  • Works with higher graded staff in support of office programs and activities to gain practical work experience.
  • Typically performs duties such as: assisting higher level employees with special projects; maintaining files; faxing and reproducing materials; receiving and distributing telephone messages and mail; maintaining office supplies; typing labels, envelopes, and simple forms; marking one type of return or document at a time for subsequent processing; extracting or counting data from documents or reports and preparing listing; etc

- Tour of Duty: Shifts vary by location. We will try to offer the shift of your preference, but you may be offered an alternate shift upon selection.
Swing Shift - Monday - Friday range between 2:00 pm and 1:30 am.
- Alternative work schedule, staggered work hours or telework may be available.
- May be eligible for telework based on IRS policy. Must meet eligibility requirements. If you are in a telework eligible position, you may be directed to temporarily telework on a full-time basis due to COVID 19. Employees must be within a 150-mile radius of their official assigned post-of-duty (POD) while in a telework status. Once normal operations resume, employees may be directed back to the office to perform the duties of their position. Telework eligibility does not guarantee telework; employees must meet and sustain IRS telework eligibility requirements and supervisor's approval to participate in the IRS Telework Program. As a reminder - If you are selected for a position, you are responsible for reporting to your designated POD (location) on the negotiated start date or as directed by management.
- The salary range indicated in this announcement reflects the minimum locality pay up to maximum locality pay for all duty locations listed. The range will be adjusted for selected duty location. General Schedule locality pay tables may be found under Salaries & Wages.
- This is temporary appointment and will be made for a specified period of time identified in the job announcement. It will not become permanent. If you currently hold a Federal position in the competitive service and accept this appointment, you will be voluntarily relinquishing the competitive position you currently hold. Upon completion of this appointment, you will not be returned to your previous position.

Qualifications

Federal experience is not required. The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-timework is considered on a prorated basis.- To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week, on your resume.

In order to qualify, you must first meet IRS Internship Program eligibility:

  1. Student Status: Current students in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying educational institution pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate, including certain home-school curricula. Individuals must be taking at least a half-time academic course load. "Half-time" is defined by the school in which the student is enrolled.
  2. Grade Point Average: You must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher each semester.
Secondly, you must meet the education requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Pathways Internship Positions:

GS-01 LEVEL: Enrollment in a high school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) program.

Education

This position has an education requirement. You MUST submit dated documentation showing current enrollment in a qualifying institution (e.g. letter from the registrar, unofficial transcripts from current semester) by the closing date of the announcement. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
