Help

As a Research Ecologist within the Wetlands and Aquatic Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Serves as an expert consultant to DOI and other federal and state resource management agencies and applications of ecosystem ecology to resource management decisions.
  • Publishes research and journal articles and USGS reports series to assure dissemination of new insights and research findings to agencies, stakeholders and the scientific community; and, present results at stakeholder and scientific meetings.
  • Manage projects to maximize scientific productivity included writing proposals to secure USGS reimbursable funds by identifying the needs of federal and state agencies; and, manage products as principal investigator, including operational oversight of technicians and student contractors and budgeting.
  • Develop and advance carbon and water cycle science using eco-physiological measurement, synthesis, and quantitative ecological or process-based models (e.g., structural equation models, climate-terrestrial wetland interface models, earth-atmospheric models, etc.) in the field of ecosystem and physiological ecology, carbon cycle science, and water cycle science to understand and predict climatic change and management influences on ecosystem processes in terrestrial and wetland systems.
  • Design, conduct, and lead research programs to develop contemporary ecosystem ecology approaches to data collection, analysis, and modeling of bioclimatic, biological, and ecological data as well as knowledge in the study and modeling of carbon and water cycling in vegetated ecosystems
  • Operates a government owned or leased vehicle as incident driver.

Physical Demands: The work involves field studies in an array of locations from high to low elevation and conditions of extreme temperatures. Day and overnight hikes of 5-10 miles per day carrying 20- 35 pound packs may be necessary. Extended periods of data manipulation and analysis and manuscript preparation will require extended periods of working at a desk and computer terminal.

Work Environment: Field conditions include an array of climatic, topographic, and vegetation conditions with typical risks from hazardous plants, insects, pollen, dust, etc. The indoor work area has adequate light, heat and ventilation.

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Ecologist, all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours or the equivalent in ecology, and 12 semester hours or the equivalent in physical and mathematical sciences.

GS-12:
In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-12 level:

**Three full years of successfully completed progressively higher-level graduate education (54 semester hours, 81 quarter hours or the equivalent) or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in ecology, biology or other directly related field underlying ecological research if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.

**OR One year of appropriate specialized experience that is in ecology, biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled.

Examples of GS-11 level work may include: 1) design, development and conduct of protocols to analyze spatial and temporal data; 2) conduct of sampling, experimental design, statistical analyses and biometrics relative to wetlands ecology; 3) independent planning and conduct of comprehensive biological studies/investigations and requests for proposals; 4) modifying and adapting standard biological techniques and procedures; 5) serving as a technical resource on biological issues; 6) design and management of projects, studies to provide an understanding of the effects of environmental perturbations in study areas.

Category rating will be used in the ranking and selection process for this position. The quality categories are Best-Qualified, Well-Qualified and Qualified. 1. Knowledge of scientific literature and contemporary, quantitative research approaches to the analysis and modeling of biological and ecological data as well as knowledge in the estimation and modeling of coastal avian populations.
2. Demonstrated use of emerging technologies (e.g., Weather Surveillance Radar, cellular and satellite networks, acoustic transmitters, light-level geolocators, etc.) in the field of avian ecology to understand and predict aspects of migratory connectivity, landscape-scale conservation, migratory phenology, persistence of local populations, disease transmission, transport of invasive species, or responses to climate change.
3. Knowledge of quantitative, structured decision making and adaptive management practices and their application towards conservation of natural resources.
4. Ability to interact successfully and cooperate with professional natural resource organizations, state, and federal natural resource agencies and university faculty including the ability to lead or participate in interdisciplinary, multiagency teams/committees to formulate information needs and interpret findings applicable to management decisions and actions.
5. Ability to synthesize and communicate complex technical information to scientific and management communities, including the ability to communicate research results through authorship of peer-reviewed scientific publications and presentations to professional audiences.
6. Knowledge of scientific literature and contemporary research approaches to the study of avian populations sufficient to plan and execute a research program including the ability to solicit/secure funding for research interests
