Help
  • You will direct the work of assisting workers, such as oilers.
  • You will comply with standard operating practices to avoid conditions which would damage the load or impair the safety of others.
  • You will perform operator maintenance a prescribed by applicable guidelines.
  • You will observe standard safety rules and regulations and report unsafe conditions.
  • You will perform visual and operational checks on equipment on a continuing basis and immediately reports defects to the supervisor.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below.

  • Ability to understand the use of outriggers or railroad switching and signaling systems.
  • Skilled in operating clutches, lever, brakes and accelerator to raise and lower the boom.
  • Operates boom cranes at various outdoor locations where maneuverability is restricted and accuracy is critical.
  • Operates bridge cranes to lift, transport and position materials in confined shop areas, where maneuverability is restricted and accuracy critical to maneuver around ground level obstacles.
  • Observes standard safety rules and regulations and reports unsafe conditions.

PHYSICAL EFFORT:

May be required to work in a standing position and must maintain balance while operating cranes.

The operating engineer (hoisting equipment)v has to make continual control changes to maneuver the crane and load and load around obstructions, stay within the lifting capacity, and to position the load at the desired location, exerting strenuous effort in pushing, pulling, depressing the various levers, clutches and brakes. May be subject to strain caused by vibrations of the crane and from the jerking and jolting motion while lifting and moving loads.

Exerts considerable effort in pushing, pulling, and depressing the various levers, clutches, and brakes to make continual control changes to maneuver the crane and load around obstruction.

Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The operator works indoors and outdoors in a partially enclosed crane cab in all types of weather.

Is exposed to unpleasant noise, heat and fumes produced by the engine. Exposed to working at elevations and to working alone, exposed to moving parts such as gears.

May be assigned to work areas where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present, these agents may include but are not limited to; fumes, dust, noise, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals.

Works outdoors in all types of weather and is exposed to unpleasant noise, heat and fumes produced by the engine. The possibility of injury cause by swinging loads or from the crane overturning is great since work is frequently performed near or at the crane's lifting capacity.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
