Duties

Help
  • Duties listed are at the full performance level.
  • Responsible for original cataloging and classification of library materials.
  • Performs copy and original cataloging including subject analysis and classification and adapts cataloging records to maintain compatibility with National Forest Service Library (NFSL) collections.
  • Assists other NFSL staff with identifying articles and publications for inclusion in the ILS and the Monthly Alert.
  • Ensures the posting and maintenance of bibliographic entries in the online catalog.
  • Ensures withdrawal of records from the catalogs when materials are no longer available and resolves problems that arise with the cataloging rules as a result of the uniqueness of some of the materials in the collections.
  • Keeps abreast of current rules, changes and procedures implemented by Library of Congress, OCLC, NFSL?s ILS vendor, and NFSL staff.

GS-1411-06:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level which includes all of the following:

  • Conducting quality control for digital objects and records uploaded to the repository.
  • Cataloging library materials and withdrawing records from library catalogs when materials are no longer available.
  • Assisting with posting and maintaining bibliographic entries in an online catalog.
OR
Education: One full year (18 semester hours) of successfully completed graduate level education with coursework directly related to the work of the position in library or information science.

OR
A combination of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience defined above. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

GS-1411-07:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-6 grade level which includes all of the following:
  • Scanning literature and websites and using knowledge of a library's collection to identify and recommend materials to customers.
  • Cataloging, reviewing and correcting errors in data entry, and formatting and coding in an automated library catalog system.
  • Posting and maintaining bibliographic entries in a web-based library catalog system.
OR
Education: I have one full year (18 semester hours) of successfully completed graduate level education if the coursework is directly related to the work of the position (for example, major in Library and Information Science. )

OR
A combination of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience defined above. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
