Duties

Help
  • Serve as a Range Operations Technician responsible for scheduling and coordinating the use of the installation training ranges and facilities.
  • Evaluate the seriousness of problems encountered in range safety matters and keeps the leadership informed of major problems and unusual work situations.
  • Discuss with range safety officers the planning and setup of training exercises as they influence the daily schedule so that all operations can be conducted within acceptable hazard and damage limits.
  • Assist in developing and enforcing regulatory requirements involving range inspections procedures and range communications procedures.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must pass pre-employment and annual medical examination.
  • Incumbent must pass pre-employment and spontaneous drug testing.
  • Incumbent is required to work evenings, nights and weekends on a rotating shift, to cover 24 hour a day, 7 day a week range operations.
  • Must Have a Valid Virginia State Driver's License for operation of government vehicles in the performance of work.
  • This position is covered by the 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968. Persons convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence are not eligible for the position.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience for GS-07: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Approve/disapprove unit requests for range and training usage to determine number of personnel training, type of weapons to be fired, ammunition, arrival and departure times of the unit, and other pertinent data related to the training exercise; 2) Re-enforce the requirements to operate, inspect, identify and eliminate hazardous conditions arising from training operations and use of a wide variety of weapons and ammunition on ranges and training areas; 3) Monitor the issuance, opening, check fire, cease fire, and closing of all live fire ranges, training facilities, and training areas through operation/communication via multiple radio nets; and/or 4) Assist in daily operations of the range control and perform actions necessary to verify that services or supplies conform to quality requirements. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education
