Duties

Help
  • Assist with activities of daily living for all patients.
  • Assist medical personnel by handling and preparing items needed for procedures.
  • Aid the medical staff in resuscitation during any emergency crisis in any hospital location where assistance is needed.
  • Clean and decontaminate equipment on a rotating basis as required by infection control guidelines.
  • Check supply cabinets and pyxis rooms to assure routine quantities are on hand.
  • Provide administrative support such as answering phone, answering and sending faxes, paging people as needed, and transferring and admitting patients to and from the critical care section.

  • Two year trial/probationary period may be required.

  • This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
  • This position is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • A pre-placement medical examination is required.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross. Certifying organization varies on location. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS
  • This position may designated as Inclement Weather Essential. You must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
  • May include shift work (evenings, weekends, holidays).
  • Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is required.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes taking and recording patient vitals, assisting physicians with minor procedures, and performing administrative duties. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-05
: Successful completion of at least a full four-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree in Nursing or related field of study. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

OR

Combination of Experience and Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-05:
If you have some, but not all, of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you possess. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of undergraduate education in excess of 60 hours (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. The Act directed the DHA to take responsibility for the administration (i.e., authority, direction, and control) of military treatment facilities beginning 1 Oct 18. Employees will become DoD employees upon transfer to the DHA.
