Duties

Help
  • Provides professional advice, guidance, and interpretation in the fields of water resources management, and fish and wildlife biology.
  • Supports and gives guidance to other District disciplines in the implementation of planning for projects.
  • Leads interdisciplinary, inter-agency planning and study teams in evaluating and assessing alternative plans, assessing environmental impacts and benefits, mitigation proposals, and general issue resolution.
  • Develops scopes and schedules; prepares cost and time estimates; monitors expenditures; and participates in status briefings on studies in aquatic and terrestrial environments.
  • Writes environmental documents to be presented to higher authority to clearly display environmental considerations (ie. EISs or EAs, portions of feasibility reports, supplements, and biological assessments, which are publicly distributed).
  • Determines impacts and relative values to a variety of environmental resources in varying geographic areas and its effect on stakeholders and the public.
  • Determines information gaps and evaluates legal requirements for environmental information.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for an Aquatic Biologist:

A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience in ALL of the following areas: (1) Conducting water quality and/or environmental investigations; (2) Preparing environmental assessments; AND (3) Developing plans to mitigate habitat loss. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
