Summary

This position is located in the in the Regional Office (ROI) of the Food and Nutrition Services (FNS), to ensure the effective and efficient operation of the federal nutrition assistance programs administered by state agencies and Indian Tribal Organizations (ITOs). The Nutritionist serves as a professional expert in the areas of nutrition science, nutrition education, promotion, policy and related subjects for the food assistance program(s).

Help
  • Serves as a expert Nutritionist providing in-depth nutrition expertise and recommendations on proposed policies and regulations and other national proposals.
  • Responsible for assuring that the assigned work is carried out by performing a wide range of technical and analytical duties as related to nutrition science, education, promotion, policy, grants, and related subjects.
  • Plans, directs, and participates in management evaluations reviews of State and local operations; develops written reports of findings and recommendations; negotiates corrective action; and conducts post-review evaluation.
  • Coordinates, develops, and delivers regional training efforts, by providing material and training to State, Indian Tribal Operations (ITO), and local staff on nutrition-related requirements.
  • Serves as coordinator for special projects and nutrition initiatives, ensuring policy and operational objectives are met.
  • Professionally presents and discusses matters on various program topics.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Time in grade:
Under competitive merit promotion procedures, any individual who is currently holding, or who has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet "time-in-grade" requirements (have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade of the grade for which you are applying). You must include an SF-50 (you may need to submit more than one) that supports meeting this requirement with your application package.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

A. Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (formerly American Dietetic Association (external link) (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation.

B. Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by AND (formerly ADA) for dietitians or nutritionists.

C. Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

NOTE: Employees currently assigned to positions in this occupational series as of September 2017 will be considered to have met the basic requirements for the position occupied. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:
To qualify for the GS-12: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal and or Public Service. Specialized experience is defined as:

  1. Providing effective oral and written communication with external and internal customers;
  2. Interpreting and analyzing technical nutrition plans and policies to deliver dietary guidelines and recommendations;
  3. Developing nutrition material and/or nutrition educational resources for targeted audiences;
  4. Developing, reviewing, and analyzing tools and data for program areas to identify problems and program trends

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
